Explorer Marisol Magaña and Explorer Aiden Schaper graduated from the South Bay Explorer Academy after successfully completing weeks of challenging training, teamwork, and personal growth.

A special congratulations goes to Explorer Aiden Schaper, who earned the Top Male Athlete Award for his outstanding performance throughout the academy.

We are incredibly proud of both Explorers and the dedication they have shown while representing South Gate. Their hard work and commitment have paid off, and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish next.

The South Gate Police Department is excited to congratulate Detective Antonio Mendez on being named the recipient of the 2026 Kiwanis Heart of a Hero Award.

For nearly 35 years, Detective Mendez has proudly served the South Gate community with professionalism, compassion, and integrity. He started out as a South Gate Police Explorer at just 15 years old and has worked in a wide range of assignments over the years, including patrol, gangs, narcotics, general investigations, DEA Task Force Officer, and K9 handler alongside his partner K9 Otis. His dedication to serving the community has always stayed strong.

Outside of his law enforcement career, Detective Mendez has also made a huge difference through community outreach, mentoring youth, coaching local sports, and helping families in need.

His leadership, dedication, and genuine care for the community and fellow offices truly reflect what this award is all about.

Congratulations, Detective Mendez, on this well-earned honor!

INDUSTRIAL FIRE INCIDENT 🚨🔥

Please avoid the area of Gardendale St. and Industrial St. The Los Angeles County Fire Department and South Gate Police Department are currently on scene of a large industrial fire.

Emergency personnel are actively working the incident and traffic delays are expected. Please use alternate routes and avoid the area to allow first responders to safely perform their duties.

Prom season is here, and our officers had the opportunity to speak with a few seniors at South East High School about making safe choices and having a memorable night for the right reasons. 🎓

As students from South East, South Gate, Legacy, and other local high schools celebrate prom this prom season, we encourage everyone to plan ahead, look out for one another, and make safety a priority.

The South Gate Police Department is committed to keeping our community safe through seat belt enforcement and traffic safety education in partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Our officers will be actively enforcing seat belt laws to help reduce preventable injuries and save lives on our roadways. Wearing your seat belt takes seconds, but it can save your life.
