Hello South Gate community,

I want to address some concerns that were brought up to my attention and I want to make a clear statement about what the outcome of the February 24, 2026 council meeting.

I did not take anyone’s democratic vote or right to vote, the question before council was “ should we declare a fiscal emergency, are we in a fiscal emergency as a city?”

As I presented my case on January 13, 2026, we do not have a revenue issue. We have a spending issue.

In good conscience, I could not vote to declare a fiscal emergency.

Declaring a fiscal emergency would’ve cost our city over $200,000 to place it in the June 2026 ballot. These funds can be utilized elsewhere, however, there is a legal process for placing increased taxes on the ballot. This was the first step in declaring a fiscal emergency just like in 2008 it was declared 10 months before. The city can choose to put it in the ballot on the November 2026, however there are legal proccess thst must be followed.

Again with all due respect “no one’s right to vote was taken”
