The South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District is proud to announce that Firefighter/Paramedic Ivan Gomez was officially released from probation at the District Board meeting in May, following the successful completion of his one-year probationary period on January 13th, 2026.

Throughout his probationary year, Ivan demonstrated dedication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to serving our community. His training included equipment orientation, district street testing, fire and EMS training, policy review, rotations through all three fire stations, and countless hours of hands-on learning and development.

Ivan's mother, Brenda, had the proud honor of pinning on his full-time badge. South Elgin Professional Firefighters Local 4833's 2nd Vice President Lieutenant Brian Beatty then presented Ivan with his probationary helmet shield mounted on a plaque, commemorating the successful completion of his probationary period.

We are fortunate to have Ivan as a member of our team and look forward to his continued success. Congratulations, Ivan!

🏡🚒 June is Home Safety Month! 🚒🏡
At South Elgin Fire District, we're committed to helping keep our community safe at home.

This Home Safety Month, take a few minutes to:
🔥Test smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed.
🔥Check that carbon monoxide alarms are working properly.
🔥Create and practice a home fire escape plan with your family.
🔥Keep exits clear and easy to access.
🔥Store medications, cleaning products, matches, lighters and flammable materials safely.
🔥Keep grills, fire pits a safe distance from any structures.
🔥Make sure your house number is visible for emergency responders.

Fire safety starts with prevention. Taking a few minutes today can make a lifesaving difference tomorrow. 🚒🚑🚒🚑

🏊‍♀️ Pool Safety Reminders 🚒
As temperatures rise and families spend more time around the water, pool safety is more important than ever.

👀Always provide active adult supervision when children are in or near the water.
🔒Install and maintain proper fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates.
🛟Keep rescue equipment and a phone nearby.
🚑 Learn CPR and basic water rescue skills.
🚫Never swim alone and avoid distractions while supervising swimmers.

Drowning can happen quickly and quietly. A few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe this summer. 🌞

Last month South Elgin Fire District was honored to have Fire Chief William Luchsinger speak with the AVID classes at the Kenyon Woods Middle School about the importance of the choices students make today and how those decisions can shape their future opportunities.

Chief Luchsinger shared his personal journey, discussing how the decisions he made throughout his life—including his service in the United States Army—helped guide him through his career in the fire service and ultimately to his role as Fire Chief. He encouraged students to stay focused on their goals, work hard, and understand that their actions, attitude, and effort today can have a lasting impact on their future careers and success.

Thank you to the AVID program for inviting us to be part of this valuable discussion and for helping students prepare for bright futures ahead. We wish all of these students continued success as they work toward achieving their goals.

This Memorial Day, the members of South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. ❤️
As we gather with family and friends, let us never forget the true meaning of the day and the freedoms we enjoy because of their courage and dedication.

We also extend our gratitude to all the veteran and active military members for their service.
