City of South Daytona - Government Government Agency South Daytona, known for its small town ambiance, is centrally located on the Halifax River.

The City has nine parks and a variety of recreational facilities including a boat and kayak launch, fishing pier, ball fields, tennis courts, splash pad, a community center and an 18-hole Disc Golf Course. The City was one of the first in the Halifax area to allow the use of golf carts on selected City streets.

Today, we’re stepping away from our regular Stormwater posts to remember and honor September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation experienced one of the most tragic events in our history. In remembrance of the lives lost and the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, South Daytona Public Safety (Police and Fire Rescue) joined surrounding fire and police departments, along with several members of our community, for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Halifax Landing.

Mayor William C. Hall, Vice Mayor Doug Quartier, Councilman Young, Councilman Sander, and City Manager James L. Gillis, Jr. were also in attendance to take part in the ceremony and support those completing the climb.

Participants, some wearing full firefighter gear, climbed 13 flights of stairs up and down eight times, honoring the firefighters and first responders who climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, never knowing they would not return home.

To everyone who participated, supported, and helped honor the lives lost that day — thank you. In memory of many and in honor of all. May we never forget.

Our Public Works crews recently completed a stormwater basin repair at the intersection of Bellewood Avenue and Jones Street.

This repair helps improve stormwater drainage, supports our infrastructure, and reduces the risk of localized flooding during heavy rain events.

The City has completed cleaning of the drainage ditch along New York Avenue to help improve stormwater flow and drainage capacity in the area. Proactive maintenance of ditches and drainage channels is an important part of protecting neighborhoods, improving water movement, and supporting the overall performance of the City’s stormwater system.

The City is committed to enhancing its stormwater system to better manage flooding events.

City Manager Gillis and City staff attended the pre-bid meeting for the Lantern Park Stormwater Pond Project at the Volusia County Purchasing Department in DeLand.

The bid opening has been extended to September 24, but this is still great progress as we move one step closer to construction!

We’re looking forward to moving this important project forward and will continue to share updates as we get closer to construction!

The City is committed to enhancing its stormwater system to better manage flooding events.

Stormwater line repairs were completed at 2158 Pope Avenue. Crews replaced a deteriorated corrugated metal pipe (CMP) with durable HDPE pipe and made necessary basin repairs to improve drainage and stormwater management in the area.

This work is part of the $500,000 CDBG grant awarded through Volusia County’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. And there’s more to come! Over the next few months, this project will include the installation of two new backflow preventers and a pump to Reed Canal, further improving the area’s stormwater infrastructure.

The City is committed to enhancing its stormwater system to better manage flooding events.

Lift Station 5, located on Violet Street, is progressing! The new lift station is expected to be operational by the end of 2026 and will provide significantly greater capacity than the existing station.

We are sharing pictures of the outer shell for the wet well. Once the concrete is poured, this massive structure will live completely underground to keep things running smoothly.

Public Works crews just finished clearing the inlet grate for the water pumps in Big Tree Shores! With the debris removed, the pumps are now receiving a much better flow to help keep our stormwater systems running efficiently.
