Butler Historical Preservation Society

The Butler Historical Preservation Society is an organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of Butler, NY. We are a non-profit 501 c3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible. The Society received its provisional charter from New York State in 2003. The main focus of the Society since then has been the restoration of the Butler

Church Museum building and the Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse. Butler Church Museum

Built in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Congregation, this is the oldest known Methodist Church in Wayne County, NY. The church operated continually until the 1960's when declining membership and funds forced its closure. The church, now home to the Butler Church Museum, is on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse

The Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse is a historic one room school located in Butler, NY. Built by Daniel Roe in the 1820's, it is believed to be the oldest cobblestone schoolhouse in North America. The schoolhouse is on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

BBB #22 from the Rochester D&C June 1895 will make you think twice before going next door to borrow that missing ingredient! Poor Henry's luck runs out in February 1899. After a search, I was unable to find where he was buried.

Run, don't walk to the BHPS Museum in Butler Center this Saturday, June 6th from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for our monthly open house. If you run by the Cobblestone Schoolhouse on Rt. 89 & VanVleck Rd., we'll also be open for your schooling!

Our Butler Bicentennial Bit #21 takes us back to May 29, 1901 when Jerome Phelps was injured at the S. Butler Creamery located on what is now Butler Conquest Road - approximately where Tim Shattuck's property currently is. The creamery was sold due to bankruptcy in 1916.

In our BBB #20, we look back at a picture of Paul Johnson posted in August 2025. With more info posted by a follower, I tracked down the sad story of 19 year old Richard (Paul's son) who lost his life in 1967 during the Vietnam War. The family is buried in the graveyard behind our Butler Center Church Museum.

We salute those lost on this Memorial Day weekend and thank those still with us for their service. A wreath was placed at the Veteran's Memorial in front of the town hall so we would like to thank whoever took care of that.

On Memorial Day, please pause at 3 p.m. for a National Moment of Remembrance.

Happy Mother's Day! This 1922 postcard has a nice sentiment for you all and in 1954 the youngsters in S. Butler didn't let the day go by without proper recognition! Wish I could see those essays...

BBB #18 takes us out to West Butler and the obituary of Frank H. Calkins who is buried in Glenside Cemetery. 60,000 bricks! You find interesting details in obituaries sometimes.

Butler Bicentennial Bit #17 is the obituary of Volney Sweeting (son of Dr. Mortimer Sweeting) who served in the Civil War as well as in Wayne County government. Pulmonary phthisis was historically known as consumption, a chronic infectious disease affecting the lungs. Volney is buried in the Lyons Rural Cemetery.

The Zenobia Commandery No. 41 was a Knights Templar men's fraternal lodge based in Palmyra, active in the early 20th century. "Zenobia" was a symbolic choice, drawing on the historical figure of Queen Zenobia of Palmyra, the 3rd century warrior queen who ruled the Palmyrene Empire that challenged both Rome & Persia.
The lodge ribbon was found on Ebay.

We're back! Our first open house of the season begins this Saturday, May 2nd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at both the Butler Center Museum and Cobblestone Schoolhouse. We're celebrating 200 years of Butler history so come on out and see how far we've come!
