Today marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

After 12 years of service to the community, York Ambulance completed their final shift in South Berwick. York Ambulance stepped up at a very vulnerable time in 2014 when South Berwick Rescue went out of business, and we will be forever grateful for their service.

We want to thank York Ambulance, and their dedicated providers for their service and working relationship over the years.

At 0700, South Berwick Fire’s EMS program went into full service. After two weeks of orientation, eight new Firefighter-EMT’s and Paramedics started their first 24 hour shift covering the community, a full month early.

This program would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the SBFD membership, the unwavering support from town leadership, and ultimately the people of South Berwick. We truly appreciate all of the support, and I can assure you, we won’t let you down!

Shortly after going online, Engine 1 and Ambulance 1 responded to the first call, an alarm activation caused by overcooked breakfast.

We are keeping the family of Firefighter Cross, and all of the firefighters in the mid-coast region in our thoughts during this difficult time. This is incident is yet another reminder that no community, is too big or too small to experience these sorts of tragedies.

Augusta – The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified the firefighter killed in the line of duty in yesterday’s Searsmont explosion as 27-year-old Morrill Firefighter Andrew Cross. State Fire Marshal Shawn Esler said, “Our deepest sympathies, thoughts, and prayers are with the firefighter’s family, loved ones, and colleagues during this devastating time.

The Maine State Police will assist with the honorable transfer this morning from the Medical Examiner’s Office at 34 Hospital Street. The procession will travel along Route 3 to Risposta’s Funeral Home in Belfast. Further information on funeral arrangements and memorial services will be shared as details become available.
