Today, we join so many across our community in grieving the loss of Dean Heisey.

Dean was a former Dismas House board member, an advocate, a volunteer, and someone who believed deeply in the power of community and belonging. He consistently showed up for people — especially in difficult moments — with compassion, steadiness, and care.

As stories continue to emerge today, we are reminded how many lives Dean quietly impacted through his presence, service, encouragement, and willingness to walk alongside others.

Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and all who are grieving this profound loss.

May we continue building the kind of community Dean believed in so deeply.

We’re honored to share that Dismas House of Indiana CEO Andee Huxhold has been selected as a 2026–27 Social Innovator Fellow with the University of Notre Dame Institute for Ethics and the Common Good.

Selected as one of only seven fellows worldwide from a highly competitive international applicant pool, Andee will join nonprofit leaders from across the globe working at the intersection of ethics, human dignity, and social transformation.

Andee’s fellowship project, "Where Love Draws the Line: Ethical Inquiry and Policy Design for Reentry Housing", will examine some of the most difficult and important questions facing reentry organizations today:

Who gets access to support?
Who gets excluded?
What does accountability look like without abandoning human dignity?

The project will focus on ethical decision-making in reentry housing systems, restorative justice, and how organizations can build inclusion models rooted in dignity, safety, belonging, and second chances.

As part of the fellowship, Andee will complete research residencies at Notre Dame and collaborate with scholars and nonprofit leaders from across the globe. The fellowship also includes implementation funding to help pilot and expand this work locally.

This recognition is deeply connected to the work happening every day at Dismas House and The Dismas Hub. We’re grateful to everyone who continues to believe in restoration, community, and the possibility of people building lives they are proud of.

As Dismas House of Indiana continues to grow in scale, reach, and impact, our Board of Directors has approved an updated leadership structure that reflects the evolving scope of the organization’s work.

Effective immediately, Andee Huxhold will transition from Executive Director to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dismas House of Indiana.

Over the past 18 months, Dismas House has expanded from a single-site organization into a growing multi-site reentry organization, launched The Dismas Hub, expanded programming and partnerships, and significantly increased organizational capacity and impact throughout our community.

This leadership transition reflects not only organizational growth, but our continued commitment to building sustainable, community-centered reentry infrastructure rooted in dignity, belonging, and second chances.

As we continue growing, community members can also expect to see additional leadership development and staffing announcements in the months ahead as we strengthen our capacity for the future.

We’re grateful for the support of our residents, staff, board members, partners, and broader community as we continue building toward the future together.

Dismas House of Indiana is growing, and we’re beginning to look ahead to future board leadership opportunities.

Each July, we open a limited number of board positions for individuals who believe in dignity, second chances, and the power of community. As our organization continues to expand, we’re especially interested in connecting with:

• Individuals with lived experience in incarceration and/or reentry
• Attorneys or individuals with legal expertise
• Someone interested in serving as Board Secretary

That said, these are simply areas that come to mind. If you feel you have gifts, experience, perspective, or passion that could strengthen our mission, we would genuinely welcome your interest.

Our Board of Directors plays an active role in strategic planning, governance, financial oversight, and long-term organizational sustainability through committee leadership and collaborative engagement.

We also believe strong boards should reflect a diversity of lived experiences and perspectives. To help ensure more equitable access to leadership, there is no minimum annual financial contribution required to serve on our Board of Directors.

We honestly can’t believe it.

Over the past year, this page has become a place where people have witnessed stories of restoration, community, belonging, second chances, art, advocacy, recovery, and hope.

Last night, our organization had the opportunity to attend and support “Unbroken: A Runway of Resilience,” as guests of Life Treatment Centers at the Chicory Event Center in Mishawaka.

Hosted by Angels in the Attic, the event focused on honoring survivors of domestic violence and highlighting the strength it takes to rebuild after trauma. The evening brought together advocates, community leaders, survivors, and organizations committed to supporting healing, restoration, and long term stability for individuals and families in our community.

Events like this are important reminders that recovery and transformation do not happen in isolation. They happen through safe spaces, community support, advocacy, and people willing to stand beside others during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Thank you to Life Treatment Centers for the invitation and to everyone involved in creating a meaningful evening centered on resilience, courage, and hope.
