Lightning Strike causes a garage fire in Clay Township

GRANGER, IN – Clay Fire Territory responded to a structure fire in the 50800 block of Galaxy Drive, Granger. Upon arrival, it was clear that lightning had struck outside the home. Crews found smoke throughout the house and immediately shut off the power. The lightning struck a tree by the roadway, traveled under the driveway, blew two holes in the driveway, then entered the garage and blew out all the electrical systems there. Crews checked the attic for extension to ensure nothing else was affected. Quick action by the homeowner, who was home at the time of the strike, called 911 to get emergency crews on the scene quickly and minimize the damage.

A message from Fire Marshal Ron Melser: “It is a good reminder that for emergency calls, call 911 first instead of contacting the fire station directly. Minutes count in getting emergency services there quickly. After a fire, never turn the power back on if it was damaged by fire or a lightning strike. Wires could be damaged inside the walls that we cannot see. Have a professional check the electrical.”
