This past week, I had the opportunity to attend Crime Unfiltered in Indianapolis. Led by criminologist and victimologist Dr. Nicky Jackson of Purdue Northwest, the event brought together the people behind the headlines and Netflix true crime documentaries to share their stories firsthand.

The focus wasn’t just on what happened, but on what we can do differently. Conversations centered on improved police training, lethality assessments during domestic violence calls, and the reliability of polygraph tests. These discussions highlighted how thoughtful policy changes can help better protect victims and prevent future violence.

I was especially moved to hear Gabby Petito’s mothers share how they have turned unimaginable loss into advocacy. Through their work, they have helped advance legislation in multiple states and continue to inspire my effort to bring the Gabby Petito Act to Indiana.

Difficult stories, but an important reminder that public policy can learn from tragedy and help prevent future violence.

That’s a good reminder for anyone in public service. It was never meant to be about titles, ambition, or the next campaign. It’s about solving problems, improving people’s lives, and leaving our communities stronger than we found them.

The ribbon has officially been cut on the new double-decker Four Winds Field! ⚾️🎉

This investment was made possible in part through Indiana’s Professional Sports and Convention Development Area (PSCDA), which allows South Bend to keep a portion of the state tax revenue generated here and reinvest it back into our community.

Renewed by the General Assembly in 2021 and expanded in 2023 to support improvements to Four Winds Field and the surrounding district, the PSCDA is helping strengthen tourism, economic development, and downtown South Bend.

Thanks to the investment from Cubs ownership and the support of state and local leaders, Four Winds Field remains a place where families gather, neighbors connect, and generations of fans come together to cheer on the South Bend Cubs and build community.

And with a win tonight, the Cubs can clinch a spot in the Midwest League playoffs.

Go Cubs Go! 🐻⚾️

On Monday, I toured the LaPorte Juvenile Correctional Facility, Indiana’s only juvenile facility for girls. During my visit, I met with staff, toured the facility, and learned more about education, mental health services, rehabilitation programs, and the challenges facing the young people housed there.

Before my visit, I asked constituents what questions they wanted answered. This article shares what I learned and how the facility prepares young people to return to their communities.

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions and to the staff who welcomed me for a thoughtful and informative visit.

Many were victims before they were offenders.

This is a major announcement for South Bend and an important investment in improving the quality, safety, and long-term affordability of housing in our community.

Years ago, I sponsored a family through the St. Vincent de Paul Society for Christmas and saw firsthand the challenges many families at this property face. That experience has stayed with me. I’m pleased to see the City backing this investment in Beacon Heights while ensuring residents can remain in their homes during renovations and have access to dignified, affordable housing for years to come.

If you have three minutes, please watch my 2021 floor speech warning the Indiana General Assembly against weakening Indiana’s state wetland protections.

My heart goes out to the families, businesses, and communities across Southern Indiana impacted by the devastating flooding we are witnessing. The images and stories coming out of these communities are heartbreaking, and I am grateful to the first responders, emergency managers, and neighbors helping one another through this difficult time.

Five years ago, I stood on the House floor and urged lawmakers not to roll back protections for Indiana’s wetlands. Wetlands are not wastelands. They absorb and store floodwaters, improve water quality, and provide a natural defense against extreme weather events.

As Indiana faces more frequent and severe weather, we have a responsibility to learn from these events and make decisions that strengthen, rather than weaken, our resilience.

UPDATE: Fire crews have extinguished the blaze at the Lafayette Building, and thankfully no injuries have been reported.

The building is a historic landmark, was vacant at the time of the fire, and is owned by the City of South Bend.

As a result of the fire, the roof collapsed, impacting operations across the street at the County Building and courthouse. Felony courts are closed and proceedings are being rescheduled.

Thank you to the South Bend Fire Department and all first responders who worked quickly to contain the fire and protect surrounding buildings.

Lafayette Boulevard between Jefferson Boulevard and Michigan Street remains closed as the fire investigation continues.

Please avoid the downtown area near The Lafayette building as the South Bend Fire and supporting units respond to an active structure fire.

Thank you to the brave firefighters and first responders working to contain the blaze and protect surrounding buildings and residents.

Tomorrow I’m heading to LaPorte to visit the LaPorte Juvenile Correctional Facility, the only state juvenile facility for girls in Indiana. I’m looking forward to learning more about rehabilitation, education, and the challenges facing young people in the justice system.
