Newport Chapter of Surfrider Foundation

Newport Chapter of Surfrider Foundation The Newport Chapter of Surfrider Foundation maintains two water quality testing labs in Depoe Bay and in Newport Oregon.

Additionally, the chapter works on many water quality issues from the Georgia Pacific pulp mill monitoring campaign to improving facilities and access points and keeping the local beaches clean.

🔸️Join us for a Highway 101 cleanup in partnership with the Oregon Hang Gliders Association, rain or shine!🌞🌧🌥

🔸️Volunteers are needed to pick up trash along a section of Highway 101 north of Newport starting at the Moolack Beach Parking area. The parking area is where the check-in table with the supplies will be located!

🔸️Volunteers are asked to wear clothing appropriate for the weather and sturdy shoes. Surfrider provides bags, single-use gloves, grabbers, and a high visibility vest.

🔸️These highway cleanups yield more trash than almost all of our beach cleanups. Help is greatly needed and appreciated for these cleanups!

💧WATER QUALITY RESULTS💧

Our (BWTF) took water quality samples at 12 sites around on 9/5/2026. Results showed high bacteria at half of the sites tested.

It is important to note that these elevated bacteria counts are a normal and expected seasonal occurrence following the first substantial rain event of the fall. This is known as the “first flush”. During the dry summer months, pollutants, including organic material, decaying leaves, and animal droppings from birds and wildlife, accumulate on streets and other surfaces. The initial, high-volume rainfall washes these accumulated pollutants directly into the stormwater drainage system and tributaries and temporarily increases bacteria concentrations at discharge points, such as creek
mouths and ocean outfalls. This is a common pattern in
coastal environments at the start of the wet season.

Our program only tests for the presence of enterococcus, bacteria that indicate f***l pollution (human or animal waste). When present, there are usually other pathogens in the water as well that can make humans sick.

Thank you to our awesome volunteers and staff at the Oregon Coast Aquarium who dedicate every other Saturday to ensure we all know it’s safe to surf, swim, and enjoy our beaches! 🤙

SURFRIDER EPISODE 14! NOW ON YOUTUBE! 📣🌊🙂

https://youtu.be/szyPB_dzMAo?is=hdzeDJoGhUI6GGEl

"In 2005, a proposed six-lane toll road threatened to pave through and destroy San Onofre State Beach and its world-famous break, Trestles. This episode reveals how the Save San Onofre Coalition, Surfrider Foundation, and the Acjachemen Nation joined forces to stop it — protecting a coastline shaped by nearly 10,000 years of Indigenous history. Host David Scales talks with Surfrider's Coastal Adaptation Manager Alex Ferron Mignogna, Acjachemen Nation Tribal Chairman Nathan Banda, and longtime California State Parks lifeguard Steve Long about how a grassroots coalition took on a multi-billion-dollar highway project — and won."

"But saving Trestles from asphalt didn't end the fight. Today, San Onofre faces chronic coastal erosion, a forecast "Super Niño" winter, and the countdown to the 2028 LA Olympics, where Lower Trestles will host the world's best surfers on a global stage. This episode explores Surfrider's nature-based solutions for coastal resilience and what's at stake for public beach access and tribal cultural resources, and how you can help protect Trestles for generations to come."

🦋The Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Gardens program uses nature-based solutions to soak up stormwater and support resilient coasts and communities. Because much of our environment has been paved over or built on, rainwater is flushed quickly through gutters, streets, and storm drains into local waterways and, ultimately, the ocean.

🪴Stormwater and urban runoff wash lawn chemicals, trash, road dust, oil, sewage overflows, and more down into our local watersheds, carrying a toxic cocktail of pollutants to the beaches where we surf, swim, and enjoy the water.

🌱Ocean Friendly Gardens (OFGs) can help slow, disperse, and soak up the flow of rainwater and runoff before it reaches storm drains and our local waterways. 🌊
