Twenty-five years later, the fire service still remembers.
On September 11, 2001, 343 members of the FDNY answered the call, entered the towers, and climbed toward danger while others were trying to escape it. They were firefighters, officers, brothers, fathers, sons, husbands, and friends. They went to work that morning expecting another day of service—and gave everything they had trying to save others.
From one fire department to another, we understand the bond that exists between those who wear the uniform. We may serve in different cities and different states, but the oath is the same: to protect, to serve, and to go when others cannot.
Today, we remember the 343, the other first responders and civilians who were lost, and the countless responders who have suffered the lasting effects of that day.
We remember the calls they answered.
We remember the lives they tried to save.
We remember the families who never got to see them come home.
And we remember the courage it took to climb those stairs.
The bells may have gone silent that day, but their legacy never will.
343 heroes. One brotherhood. One promise.
