Last night at the Village of South Amherst council meeting, we officially swore in three new members and one promotion.

The oath they took represents a commitment to serve our community with integrity, dedication, and professionalism. Becoming a firefighter or officer is more than wearing a uniform—it is a promise to answer the call when our neighbors need us most.

This Father’s Day, the South Amherst Fire Department would like to recognize and thank all of the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures in our community and within our department.

We are especially grateful for the dads who answer the call at all hours, balancing the responsibilities of serving their community while being role models, providers, and heroes at home. Your dedication, sacrifice, and commitment do not go unnoticed.

To all fathers spending the day with family, working, or serving others—thank you for everything you do.

From all of us at the South Amherst Fire Department, we wish you a safe, happy, and well-deserved Father’s Day!

Severe thunderstorms are possible across most of the area Wednesday night with the best chance west of Interstate 77. All severe weather hazards are on the table, but at this time confidence is highest in damaging winds and heavy rainfall. ⚠️ PUBLIC SAFETY REMINDER ⚠️

If you see a tree branch on a power line or a downed wire, STAY AWAY and keep others away. Never assume a power line is de-energized. Even lines that appear inactive can still carry enough electricity to cause serious injury

A downed power line can energize the ground, nearby trees, fences, vehicles, and other objects. Your safety is not worth the risk.

We also want to take a moment and send a huge thank you to our dedicated members that worked through this storm in order to clear roadways, ensure safety of our residents and still respond to calls not associated with the storm. Remember we are not a staffed department so these members are taking time away from their family’s and significant others in order to respond to these calls. The SAFD responded to 14 calls in a little over 2hrs and handled them professionally and timely.

* Until 700 PM EDT.

* At 617 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Northern Milan, or 7 miles north of Norwalk, moving southeast at 25 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Minor damage to vehicles is possible. Expect damage to trees and power lines.

* Locations impacted include... Norwalk, Milan, Northern Milan, Wakeman, Oberlin, Berlin Heights, Kipton, and Birmingham.

🔥 Live Fire Training 🔥

Today, our firefighters participated in live fire training to sharpen their skills and continue their commitment to excellence.

Training is one of the most important things firefighters do to prepare for real emergencies. Live fire training provides hands-on experience in realistic conditions, allowing firefighters to practice critical skills such as fire attack, search and rescue, ventilation, communication, and teamwork.

The heat, smoke, and stress encountered during live fire exercises help build confidence and reinforce the skills needed when lives and property are on the line. These training opportunities ensure our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively when our community needs us most.

Thank you to Carlisle Township Fire for inviting us to participate in this valuable training and work along side multiple very valuable mutual aid partners!
