In keeping with this spirit of remembrance and gratitude, Sheriff Vasquez attended the annual Memorial Day service at Carter’s Cemetery in the township of Tuolumne. The cemetery holds its service every year on May 30—the traditional date established in 1868—to pay tribute to the heroes who gave everything for our country.

We’d like to thank Carter’s Cemetery, VFW Post 4748, and Tuolumne Fire for the moving service, and Miss Daphne Oliva for her beautiful renditions of the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America.

*** National Safe Boating Week ***

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office is getting prepared for another busy boating season. We would like to provide you with a friendly reminder about essential boating safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

1. Life Jackets: To prioritize the safety of everyone on board, each vessel occupant must have a readily accessible life jacket while the boat is in motion.

2. Life Jackets for Children: Specifically for children under 13 years of age, it is mandatory for them to always wear a life jacket while the vessel is in motion.

3. Type IV Throwable: Each vessel must have a Type IV Throwable Floatation Device.

4. Fire Extinguisher: Prioritize preparedness by verifying that your fire extinguisher is fully charged and in proper working condition.

5. Sound-Making Device: Equipping your vessel with a noise or sound-making device is essential for effective communication and signaling.

6. California Boaters Card: Please be aware that all boaters operating the vessel are required to have a CA Boater Card.

7. Designated Lookout: Ensure the safety of your occupants and individuals engaged in water activities, such as skiing, by always having a designated lookout.

8. Hydration: Given the heat, we strongly advise maintaining proper hydration by regularly consuming water while enjoying the lakes.

9. Alcohol Consumption: While it is not illegal to consume alcohol on a boat, operating a vessel under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs is against the law. The blood alcohol limit for boating is the same as that for driving a car, which is 0.08%. Boating Under the Influence (BUI) convictions may result in a fine of up to $1,000 and a jail term of six months.

Our Boating Enforcement Deputy’s will be out on patrol throughout the summer to help keep our waterways safe for everyone. We encourage all boaters to operate responsibly, be courteous to others on the water, and always put safety first.

*** Information on School Threat ***

Due to the misinformation circulating within the community regarding the alleged threats involving Soulsbyville Elementary School, we are releasing the following information to provide accurate details and address public concern.

On 05/15/26, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the administration of Soulsbyville Elementary School regarding an alleged threat. A School Resource Deputy (SRD) responded to the school and contacted staff members and several students, including the 13-year-old student involved in the incident. Based on the information gathered during the investigation, the comments allegedly made by the student did not rise to the level of a criminal violation. The student was disciplined by the school and sent home.

The School Resource Deputy immediately followed up with the student and parent at their residence to ensure all fi****ms in the home were properly secured and that the child did not have access to any weapons. The family was cooperative with the deputy and the investigation.

At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined there was no credible threat to the school, students, or staff.

In a separate and unrelated incident on 05/17/26, a 14-year-old juvenile associated with Soulsbyville Elementary School (not the same juvenile from the previous incident) was discovered prowling in the Willow Springs Drive area of Soulsbyville. During the incident, the juvenile entered several unlocked vehicles and stole multiple items, including a pistol.

With the assistance of community members and surveillance video footage, deputies were able to identify the juvenile and their residence. On 05/18/26, deputies responded to the residence and, with the cooperation of family members, conducted a search of the home. During the search, deputies recovered the stolen firearm.

On 05/19/26, the juvenile was arrested by Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and booked into the Motherlode Regional Juvenile Detention Facility.

We understand the concern these incidents have caused within our community and encourage the public to rely on verified information released by official sources.
