When stories were lessons…

In 1876, Mariano Vallejo wrote a letter to his granddaughter filled with more than just updates—he shared stories. Through descriptions of animals, nature, and everyday life, he passed along lessons about the world she was growing up in. He even included warnings about real dangers, like thieves who threatened families and their livelihoods.

At a time when letters carried the weight of connection, storytelling became a powerful way to teach, guide, and stay close across distance. These stories helped shape understanding, values, and a sense of place.

While times have changed, the importance of storytelling remains. Whether shared by parents, grandparents, or community members, stories continue to connect us to each other—and to the past.

What’s a story that’s been passed down in your family? We’d love to hear it.

📚 Our staff at Sonoma State Historic Park are always reading, researching, and learning more about the people who shaped California’s early history — and few figures spark more discussion than General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.

From his political leadership to his complex role during the transition from Mexican to American rule, Vallejo’s story is layered and fascinating — and sometimes, a bit complicated!

The first image shows one of our favorite reads, General Vallejo and the Advent of the Americans by Alan Rosenus, a must for anyone wanting to dive into 19th-century California.

The second image? Well… let’s just say it captures the struggle historians face when looking back at the past and asking, “Who would you have supported?” 😅

We study these stories not to take sides, but to better understand how California’s past shaped the present — and to keep the conversation going.
