Sonoma Garden Park

Sonoma Garden Park is a 6.1 acre working farm, center of education, and public park. We are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

A project of the Sonoma Ecology Center, Sonoma Garden Park provides a beautiful, natural environment with educational opportunities for both adults and children. The property was a gift from Pauline Bond, schoolteacher and a gardener, to the City of Sonoma. Sonoma Ecology Center has developed the property and maintains it to promote sustainable garden & farming practices in the community.

Welcome back to Building Biodiversity, our series where we give you a sneak peek into the pollinator-friendly plants that are blooming in Sonoma Garden Park’s Native Plant Nursery.

This week’s spotlight is California Asters (Symphyotrichum chilense)! We currently have California Asters and California Goldenrods beautifully blooming together in the nursery.

In Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book, Braiding Sweetgrass, she shares the magic of asters and goldenrods together.

“That September pairing of purple and gold is lived reciprocity; its wisdom is that the beauty of one is illuminated by the radiance of the other. Science and art, matter and spirit, indigenous knowledge and Western science— can they be goldenrod and asters for each other? When I am in their presence, their beauty asks me for reciprocity, to be the complementary color, to make something beautiful in response.”

This week's spotlight is the Western Columbine (Aquilegia formosa)!

The Western Columbine is a striking native perennial featuring dangling red and yellow spurred flowers. It benefits local ecosystems by providing vital nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies, offering ornamental beauty in shady garden spots, and supporting native wildlife.

Come enjoy the bounty of your local community garden park! Tomorrow (Saturday) from 9:00 am-1:00 pm, the Strawbale Barn is open and full of delicious produce—grown right here at Sonoma Garden Park—and local treasures like handcrafted olive oil and block print art.

Calling all fermentation fanatics! Every year we host a (friendly) "Culinary Competition" at the Harvest Festival, and this time we’ve decided to feature a Sonoma Garden Park favorite—quick pickles!

Contestants can choose from two categories:

~ Fresh Refrigerator Kept Sweet Pickles—cucumbers are the only required ingredient.
~ Fresh Refrigerator Kept Savory Pickles—any fruit or vegetables pickled in a brine with herbs, spices, vinegar...whatever your secret recipe may be!

This week's spotlight is California Goldenrod (Solidago velutina ssp. Californica)!

A member of the sunflower family, this California native lights up open woodlands, grasslands, and streambanks with bright yellow flower clusters that bloom late summer into fall. Tough and adaptable, it spreads readily by rhizome and provides a crucial nectar source for native bees and butterflies just as other blooms are fading.
