This week in the Active Fleet...

A U.S. Sailor checks an azimuth reading on the bridge-wing while serving as the officer of the deck of Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87), June 13, 2026. Mason is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations to support maritime security and stability in the Middle East.

DDG 87 is the third U.S. Navy warship bearing the name USS Mason. The first, DD 191, was named for John Young Mason and was in service from 1920 to 1941. The second, DE 529, was named for Ensign Newton Henry Mason and served from 1943 to 1945. DDG 87 is named in honor of the crew of the second USS Mason DE 529, the first U.S. Navy ship having a predominantly African-American crew.

Happy Juneteenth! BZ to the courage and contributions of Black Americans past and present!

Tin Can Sailors Special Collections has over the past several years accumulated numerous Navy Deck Logs for their archives.

What is the purpose of Deck Logs? What role do they play on a ship? What is their importance?

A Deck Log forms a chronological account of notable events that happen in and around the ship. The officers of the deck use this account as a reminder/check of the duties and activities assigned to them that day.

Each Title Page includes the ship’s name and hull number, commander, division, squadron, flotilla, or fleet to which the ship was attached. Also noted are the beginning and ending dates in the log, and the location of the ship at the time of the recording.

These logs must be permanently retained. One important reason to retain these records is if evidence is required in any legal proceedings in a naval, admiralty, or civil court.

At present, the collection of Deck Logs at TCS spans the years from 1941 to 1970. (See Photos) Recently, TCS obtained a professionally bound set of Deck Logs from the USS Daly DD519 beginning with July 1951 through June 1954. (See Photos) We welcome donations of Destroyer Deck Logs for our shelves at any time. It is true that you can find a list of deck logs online in the National Archives Catalog, but the convenience and interesting time spent reviewing our logs is a bonus for visitors doing research or just interested in Navy history.

Early in the foggy morning of 10 June, with Lieutenant Commander Elliot M. Brown in command, Benson class destroyer USS Frazier DD-607 made two separate attacks on radar contacts which were believed to be submarines. In the second attack, the destroyer's guns fired for five minutes as she pursued her target until its radar echo merged with land echo of Kiska.

That night and again on the morning of 11 June, Frazier dropped depth charges on two different underwater contacts in which it is likely she sank Japanese submarine I-9.
