A new map will be out tomorrow morning (Sunday, the 18th), but we wanted to give you all an idea of what the combination of wind and colder temperatures will do for lake effect snow enhancement between tonight and early Tuesday morning for the state of Michigan.

We do have a clipper moving in Sunday night that will bring a burst of an inch, maybe a tad bit more for the entire state. Now, lake effect is already ongoing today and will be tomorrow, however, we really kick it into 4th gear as we turn the corner into Monday. Winter weather advisories are currently in effect for the lake effect ongoing, but winter storm watches have also just been issued for the end of the weekend into the start of the work week.

Totals solidly in the 6-12" zone are likely for areas in pink by Monday night. Totals over 12" are likely for parts of the Porcupine Mountains as well. Elsewhere, 1-3", 2-4", and 3-7" zones blanket parts of the state that will still get snow, while also being more uncertain on just how far the wind can carry these lake effect bands.

Again, with our 00z suite coming out tonight, we will have an updated snowfall forecast coming out tomorrow morning. Additionally, more wind/cold weather content will be coming your way tonight. A briefing will likely be held tomorrow here at Michigan Storm Chasers, which you can watch live on Facebook, YouTube (recommended), X, or Twitch TV. Time to be announced later.

Time of this post, 3:15 pm EST 1/17/2026.

Potential is increasing for an arctic air mass to impact all of Michigan next week. Of particular concern will be Monday into Tuesday, when wind chills well below zero will be possible. In addition to the cold, lake effect snow will be possible in the snowbelts, which will lead to hazardous travel conditions. Be sure to monitor the forecast for future updates!
