For the past five years, Coach Ty Jones has been a familiar face in Somerset ISD, serving as a physical education teacher, high school football coach, assistant baseball coach and mentor to countless students.
A New Mexico native, Jones has taught in several school districts throughout his career. He and his family came to Somerset to become part of Bulldog Nation and continue his passion for education at Zacharias Early College Leadership Academy
With a master’s degree in special education, Coach Jones takes an individualized approach to teaching, tailoring his instruction to each student’s learning style and providing the support they need to succeed.
“My why is to give back what was given to me,” Jones said.
That philosophy is rooted in a coach who made a lasting impact on his own life. Jones recalls a high school coach, Tom Ryan, who became a father figure and mentor to him. One Thanksgiving, when Jones’ family was struggling and had to go without, Ryan stopped by their home with a turkey and all the fixings.
That simple act of kindness stayed with Jones and continues to shape the way he works with students today.
“I approach the kids with the same care and respect that was shown to me,” Jones said. “No excuses. You can make it and find a way to give back.”
Jones also understands firsthand the challenges that can stand between students and their dreams. He worked hard to make his own way to college, an experience that shaped his belief in the power of higher education.
Today, he hopes his story can serve as an example to his students, that obstacles do not have to determine their future.
Through his teaching, coaching and mentorship, Jones strives to remind every student that with determination, support and a willingness to find a way forward, they are capable of achieving their goals and creating opportunities for themselves and others.
