In 2025, 67% of the people who stayed at the Next Step Center obtained a source of income.

For someone starting over, income can mean groceries, transportation to work, an application fee, or the security deposit on an apartment. It can be the first real foothold toward a more stable life.

At the Next Step Center, we provide more than a safe place to sleep. We help people take the practical steps that make moving forward possible.

To every resident who kept going—and every Somerset County neighbor who helped make that progress possible—thank you.

In 2025, 73% of the people who stayed at the Next Step Center found safe, affordable housing.

That means a key. A door that locks. A place to come home to.

Emergency shelter is where our work begins. Our goal is to help every person and family move toward lasting safety, stability, and a home of their own.

We could not do this without the people of Somerset County who support the Next Step Center and care for their neighbors.

Together, we can be the Next Step.

For most of us, home is the place we return to at the end of the day. It is where we sleep, where our children feel safe, and where we can close the door and know we have somewhere to belong.

For some of our neighbors in Somerset County, that security is gone.

That is why the Next Step Center exists.

When an individual or family comes through our doors, they are often facing one of the most difficult times in their lives. We may not be able to change everything that brought them to us, but we can give them a safe place to stay, treat them with dignity, and help them begin moving forward.

In 2025, the Next Step Center provided shelter to 64 individuals representing 36 families. Of those we served, 73% found safe, affordable housing and 67% obtained income.

Behind those numbers are people from right here in our community who needed help at a difficult time in their lives. Some needed a safe place to sleep. Some needed time to get back on their feet. Some needed help finding work or housing. What they all needed was a chance to move forward.

As we begin our 2026 Annual Campaign, we are asking our community to stand with us.

Your gift helps keep the lights on and the shelter running. It helps provide food, household necessities, and a safe place to stay. It also supports the programs and services that help our residents find employment, secure housing, regain stability, and begin again.

There are many worthy causes asking for support. We simply ask that you remember the people in our own community who, for a time, have nowhere else to turn.
