Meet Our Soldier:

Spc. Liam Indoe, a West Milford, New Jersey resident, joined the New Jersey National Guard in March 2022. After graduating from West Milford Township High School, he continued his studies with the education benefits afforded by NJNG’s tuition waiver program. He is currently a junior at Thomas Edison State University where he is pursuing a degree in Cyber Security.

“I joined the military for the job of being an intelligence analyst, obtaining a TS/SCI, and school benefits to further my education,” said Indoe. Still unsure of his long-term goals in the military, Indoe is interested in becoming a warrant officer.

Deployed to the U.S. CENTCOM area of responsibility, Indoe is working in the badging section of Task Force Integrator’s office, where he issues badges to third country nationals and local nationals, and checks military/contractor’s security clearance validity through the Defense Information System for Security program.

The front office gets a lot of traffic, said Indoe, and that has been one of the best parts of his job. “Meeting all different kinds of people is interesting,” explained Indoe. “Everyone must go through the badging office so in that office we had exposure to US forces, coalition forces, partner forces, and local and third country nationals working on base. It was very interesting to talk with everyone.”

This deployment has been a learning experience for Indoe. Mainly it has exposed him to the importance of security and how his job as an intelligence analyst is critical to Operation Inherent Resolve mission success. “I learned a lot more about security and the importance of vetting people properly,” said Indoe. “I also learned a lot of problem solving and finding compromises when unique situations occurred and policy did not cover it.”

Meet Our Soldier:

U.S. Army Sgt. Katherine Valdivieso, originally from Lodi, New Jersey, attended Lodi High School and completed some of her college credits at Rutgers University in Newark. She is continuing her education at Thomas Edison State University. Valdivieso joined the military in 2018 at 17 years old through the Split Training Option, which allowed her to complete basic training after her junior year and her advanced individual training after her senior year.

“I chose to serve because I wanted to fully embrace the opportunities this country has provided and to challenge myself to grow beyond my comfort zone,” said Valdivieso. “The Army has given me structure, purpose, and a platform to build a future through discipline and service. Becoming a mother has deepened that purpose. Everything I do now is to build a legacy that my son can be proud of and to show him that discipline, resilience, and faith can take you anywhere.”

Valdivieso’s long-term goal in the military is to continue developing as a leader and ultimately complete a full career in service. She wants to mentor and shape the next generation of Soldiers, just as her leaders once invested in her.

Currently deployed to the U.S. CENTCOM area of operation, Valdivieso serves as a supply sergeant and is responsible for the accountability and management of more than $30 million of military equipment in support of mission operations and life support. Her role directly contributes to operational readiness and ensures that Soldiers have what they need to accomplish the mission safely and effectively.

She feels the best part of her job is the people she is currently working alongside. She’s had the privilege of working alongside Soldiers and coalition partners from different backgrounds and cultures, and these interactions remind her that relationships are built on respect, communication, and teamwork. During this deployment, she has learned the true meaning of resilience, patience, and friendship. Being away from home, especially from her son, has strengthened her sense of purpose and reinforced the importance of leading with integrity and compassion.

“The experiences during this deployment has shaped me into a stronger leader, a more patient teammate, and a more dedicated mother,” said Valdivieso.

Meet Our Soldier:

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sabirah Sheermohamed, a Jersey City, New Jersey, resident joined the military in November 2018 to challenge herself and grow both personally and professionally.

She said the Army has allowed her to develop responsibility, resilience and strong leadership skill while giving her the opportunity to support and mentor others. Additionally, her experience in the Army has helped shaped her academic and professional goals, as she has used the New Jersey National Guard’s tuition waiver program to obtain a bachelor’s degree and her current pursuit of a master’s degree from Rutgers University’s School of Health Professions for Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology.

Currently deployed to the U.S. CENTCOM area of operations in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, Sheermohamed serves as the logistics noncommissioned officer in charge for Task Force Integrator. Her duties include military property accountability where she oversees the management and maintenance of equipment on three property books. She also supports the supply operations and ensures CJTF-OIR staff and task forces have the resources to accomplish their mission.

“The best part of my job is the networking and communication,” said Sheermohamed. “I love meeting many different people from contractors to coalition partners. It’s fun learning from people from all different backgrounds.”

According to Sheermohamed, she has learned a lot from this deployment. Mainly how to adapt and overcome. “Changes happen every minute and you must pick up and keep driving on, no matter what gets thrown at you,” she said. “One of my favorite quotes from the character named Rafiki in the movie ‘The Lion King’ is, “change is good yeah, but it is not easy”. This quote has been the motto on this deployment. I have changed both professionally and personally.”

She plans to continue to serve in the military and use her experience to mentor other Soldiers hopefully as a warrant officer. “I would like to continue developing as a leader while taking on greater responsibility in supporting Soldiers and missions,” said Sheermohamed. “I want to continue to mentor junior Soldiers while pursuing advanced education and using that education and military experience to make a positive impact on Soldiers and the military.”

Meet Our Soldier:

U.S. Army 1st Lt. Tyasia Harris, a Bayonne, N.J., resident joined the military to gain access to education that would otherwise have been financially out of her reach. As a first-generation college student who attended Seton Hall University, she did not have the same financial resources or generational guidance as many of her peers. Thus, the military provided a path for her to pursue higher education without placing an overwhelming burden on her family or herself and through the universities Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, Harris joined the New Jersey National Guard in 2019.

“Through hard work I was able to secure a two-year scholarship which got me through the remaining years of college,” said Harris.

Currently, Harris is deployed to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. She is in charge of the facilities management office for OIR and is the liaison between the building tenants and the Directorate of Public Works. She conducts building walkthroughs to ensure the facility is clean, workable, and safe. If an issue with the facility comes up, she places a work order to get the issue rectified. Other duties include escorting contractors to complete work orders; fire warden and key custodian that requires her to conduct fire inspections, building walk throughs documenting deficiencies, and then correcting those deficiencies.

Harris has learned the importance of adaptability and teamwork during this deployment. “Operating away from home and familiar resources required me to remain flexible and reactive,” said Harris. “I gained a deeper appreciation for how individual roles directly impact the overall readiness and success, and I learned to communicate more effectively under pressure.”

Harris’ long-term goal is to become a physician assistant through the military's Interservice Physician Assistant Program. She is planning to apply to the program this year, with the intent of continuing her military service by providing high-quality medical care to Soldiers. “I am passionate about caring for others and I want to channel that passion into supporting the health, readiness, and well-being of those who serve,” she said. “By becoming a military physician assistant, I hope to give back to the Army by ensuring Soldiers are medically prepared to accomplish their missions and receive compassionate, competent care throughout their service.”

Godspeed to our Soldiers on their deployment.

Meet Our Soldier:

Spc. Brandon Ramos grew up in Woodbridge, New Jersey, where he graduated from Woodbridge High School in 2018. Looking to better himself and provide for his family, he decided to join the New Jersey Army National Guard in March 2022. That decision allowed him to continue his education, and he is currently majoring in criminal justice at Thomas Edison State University. On the civilian side, Ramos is a police officer with the Irvington Police Department.

Currently, Ramos is deployed to the U.S. CENTCOM area of responsibility in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. His current duties as a DEERS operator keeps him busy interacting with other U.S. military personnel, coalition partners, and contractors by verifying their eligibility to be issued a common access card, update records, ensure accuracy of data, answer inquiries, and manage walk-ins or appointments.

His long-term goals in the military are to be the best leader he can be and continue to help shape the military’s vision in the future.

“Patience is a virtue and when you dedicate more time towards your goals and you meet it with maximum effort, they are achievable,” says Ramos.
