The annual maple festival activities kicked off on Saturday with the tree tapping ceremony at Wagner's sugar camp, owned by the Walters family. The Walters family has compiled an amazing collection of Somerset County maple history, which is exhibited in their museum and accessible during the tour over the next two weekends. The maple tours will be held on March 7-8 and March 14-15 from 10am - 4pm. I want to extend my best wishes to the 12 maple princesses for a successful year and an enjoyable experience. I had the pleasure of recognizing two outstanding Somerset County residents yesterday. Kathy Trexel Reed, the talented artist who designed the Bells Across America exhibit, was the first honoree. Her exhibit, which will be displayed at the County Annex building as part of America's 250th anniversary celebration next year, beautifully captures the spirit of our County. I encourage everyone to visit the exhibit when they can. The second honoree was Tom Close of the Confluence Volunteer Fire Department, who has devoted 50 years of service to his community as a volunteer firefighter and currently serves as the Department's President. After speaking with him, it was clear that he is driven by a passion for 'people helping people.' I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Tom for his remarkable service, leadership, and commitment to our communities.

On behalf of Somerset County, I wish to acknowledge and thank State Representative Carl Walker Metzgar and Senator Pat Stefano for their efforts in securing over $2 million in grant funding, which will enable our Boroughs and Municipalities to acquire essential emergency and road maintenance equipment, and undertake various community development projects.
