🎉 Exciting News from the SMS International Club! 🌍

We’re honored to have received a special letter of thanks, along with a hand-painted coffee bag—from the Pulsera Project, recognizing our school’s ongoing commitment to fair trade, social justice, and global citizenship. Through our partnership with artisans in Nicaragua and Guatemala, we’ve hosted 5 pulsera (bracelet) sales, raising $9,102 to support their incredible work. The coffee bag is on display in the vestibule of SMS.

Our 6th sale is coming in March 2026, and we’re thrilled to continue this journey. We’re proud to be part of the Pulsera Project network and to participate in truly coloring the world—one bracelet at a time. 🎨🌈

Who does hard things? Our Primrose students do! Every day, these children tackle challenging tasks: homework, bike riding, reading, adding and subtracting! There’s nothing these students can’t do!

During Monday’s assembly, presenters Scott and Beth reminded the children that though there may be things that they can’t do yet, they will improve with practice and a growth mindset. As the week continued, students wore red on Tuesday for Red Ribbon Week and were treated to encouraging red bracelets from the PTA and a healthy apple from Stuart’s Farm to remind them to make healthy choices.

Finally, the staff members took out a book we have loved for years: I Can Do Hard Things by Gabi Garcia and Charity Russell. In this book, readers reflect on all the hard things one tackles in life. They are also introduced to affirmations that boost confidence and can help calm nerves. With everything going on in our lives, this may be something adult readers could use as well! We can ALL do hard things.

The SIS Zen Den is a newly created wellness space designed to support all students at SIS in moments when they need to recharge, take a break, or process big feelings. Whether it's a few minutes to reset or a quiet moment to regulate emotions, the Zen Den offers a safe and calming environment tailored to student needs.

This initiative was spearheaded by a dedicated team of SIS staff members: Randi Pepe, (SIS LIFE Coordinator), Allison Quincoses (Occupational Therapist) and Jenna Knudsen, (Social Worker).

In June 2025, Randi Pepe submitted a grant proposal to the Somers Education Foundation (SEF), drawing on the professional expertise of Allison and Jenna to shape the vision and purpose of the space. The grant was approved and funded in collaboration with the Somers Central School District in August 2025, making the Zen Den a reality.

The room is thoughtfully equipped with items that promote self-regulation and emotional well-being. From sensory tools to cozy seating, every element was selected to help students reset and return to learning with a clearer mind and calmer body.

A special thank you to the SCSD Maintenance Team, who played a crucial role in bringing the Zen Den to life. Their dedication and hands-on support—spending several days installing and setting up the space—ensured everything was safe, functional, and welcoming for students.

The Zen Den officially opened its doors on Monday, October 27th, and has quickly become a valued resource. Students visit the space for short, 5-10 minute breaks throughout the day, using it as a proactive strategy to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm.

This space reflects SIS’s commitment to nurturing the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.
