Bravo to the talented students of Somers Middle School Theater!
This past week, our students wowed audiences with three SOLD OUT performances of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical Jr. on May 15 & 16, along with special school performances on May 14 & 15.
A total of 38 students from every middle school grade level participated in the production, with especially strong representation from our fifth graders! Through seven weeks of rehearsals and hard work, students learned the power of teamwork, resilience, and creative expression.
For many students, theater became more than just a performance. As Charlotte Beattie shared, “Theater is a safe place where I can be myself and express different ideas and thoughts.” Gus Carey-Louden reflected on “the teamwork and working together to get things done,” while Londyn Hutcherson shared that theater taught her “the importance of patience and resilience.”
Students also discovered confidence and creativity on stage. “I learned that I can speak up,” said Lilyana Franklin, who embraced acting for the first time this season. Viola Carey-Louden described loving the opportunity to “really immerse myself in the character I’m playing,” while Ava Ruonavaara reminded us that theater is “a great experience to help you through being embarrassed and having stage fright,” adding that hearing audience laughter and applause “makes the whole thing worth it.”
A few special highlights from this incredible production:
⭐ Eighth-grader Viola Carey-Louden delivered a commanding performance as Miss Trunchbull
⭐ Londyn Hutcherson charmed audiences as Miss Honey
⭐ Juliet Franklin made her acting debut as Mrs. Phelps, the librarian
⭐ Kelsey Scott played the “meanest” Big Kid
⭐ Keeley McClish kept the spotlight shining as lighting technician
⭐ Seventh-grader Kenzie Kilduff took on the demanding title role of Matilda, appearing in nearly every scene and mastering Matilda’s challenging songs
We are so proud of the dedication, courage, and creativity shown by every cast and crew member. Thank you to our families, staff, and community for supporting the arts and helping make this production such a success!
Stay tuned this fall when Somers Middle School Theater announces its 2027 production!
