Village Residents,
I want to keep everyone up to date on the current Lake Ontario water levels and the Village’s continued preparedness efforts as we move into the summer season.
At this time, lake levels have stabilized below our local emergency response thresholds here in Sodus Point. The current official lake level, as reported by the International Joint Commission (IJC), is 247.34 feet. While the lake recently reached the regional flood stage, the rate of rise has slowed significantly over the past several days.
Current conditions remain favorable:
• Official Lake Level (IJC): 247.34 feet (As of June 3rd)
• Unofficial Local Readings: Approximately 247.3 feet (NWLON stations in Rochester and Oswego)
• Outflow Rate: Approximately 8,100 cubic meters per second
• Forecast Outlook: Current projections from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers indicate lake levels are expected to remain well below the Village’s next emergency response trigger.
Based on current forecasts and continued coordination with State and County emergency management partners, the Village does not anticipate the need for additional flood response measures at this time. However, in accordance with the Village’s Emergency Response Plan, sandbag resources will continue to remain staged at the Village Highway Barn should conditions change.
For transparency, the next phase of the Village’s emergency plan would involve deploying sandbag resources to vulnerable areas and activating auxiliary pumps to help protect portions of the Village sewer infrastructure. At this time, current conditions do not indicate that those measures will be necessary.
Our staff will continue monitoring lake conditions daily and coordinating closely with our emergency management partners. If conditions change, we will provide updates to the community as quickly as possible.
I will be working on the Beacon next to give an update on all the summer activities coming up this year.

Village Residents,

I wanted to provide everyone with a brief update regarding current lake conditions and preparedness efforts.

According to the International Joint Commission (IJC), the current official lake level is 247.28, with outflows currently at 8,070. Beginning tomorrow, we move to the next date within our emergency planning timeline, which places us in a more favorable position and further away from the potential need to place sandbags in vulnerable areas.

I also want to extend a huge thank you to Scott Johnson and JT Storage Co. for donating their time, labor, and support to help the Village produce and palletize approximately 7,000 sandbags. Their assistance has been greatly appreciated.

At this time, the sandbags are being stored at the Highway Barn while we continue to evaluate long-term forecast conditions. While current trends are encouraging, we want to ensure the Village remains prepared should conditions change.

Over the next week, we will continue monitoring conditions daily and determining whether these materials will be needed for critical infrastructure and vulnerable areas. If they are ultimately deemed unnecessary for emergency operations, the Village intends to make sandbags available to residents following the holiday weekend to assist property owners with protecting their homes for the remainder of the summer season.

In addition, we are currently working to coordinate a list of volunteer organizations that may be available to assist residents who are physically unable to place sandbags themselves if the need arises.

As always, the Village will continue working closely with County and State officials and will provide updates as conditions change.

Today, the Village of Sodus Point and the volunteer men and women of the Sodus Point Fire Department pause to honor the brave firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

On National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day, we remember their courage, dedication, and selfless commitment to protecting others. Their legacy lives on through the lives they saved, the communities they strengthened, and the example of service they set for us all.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to the firefighters who continue to answer the call each day, putting themselves in harm’s way to keep our families, neighbors, and community safe. May we never forget those we have lost, and may we always stand in support of those who serve.
