11:26PM Update: Atmos Energy has given the ALL CLEAR. It is safe to return to your residence if you were evacuated. Thank you for your patience as we worked through this incident.

10:15PM Update: Atmos Energy is repairing the line now. We understand the inconvenience and disruption this has caused, but public safety is our main priority. We will update this page as soon as we receive the all-clear. As of this update, the temporary shelter at the armory has closed because no residents need a safe place.

Update: Scurry County Armory is open as an evacuee sanctuary until it is safe to return to the area.

Emergency Management and Atmos Energy crews are currently on scene of a gas leak near 17th Street and Avenue T.

Please avoid the area while crews work to secure the scene.

Updates and information for evacuees will be posted on the Scurry County Office of Emergency Management page.

Please share this message with friends, family, neighbors, and others who may not have access to social media so they can be informed.

September is National Preparedness Month, a time to focus on how we can better prepare our families and communities for emergencies. This month, Scurry County is taking an important step forward in strengthening our emergency warning capabilities.

The Office of Emergency Management has received the first shipment of equipment for our new countywide warning system. The remaining equipment is expected to arrive on September 18, with crews scheduled to arrive on September 21 to begin assembling and installing the devices.

As the system is assembled and installed, crews will conduct routine testing. During this time, residents may hear the warning signals.

Please do not be alarmed. These sounds are part of the normal testing process and do not indicate an emergency.

In the coming weeks, we’ll share videos explaining how the new system works and the two different warning signals residents should know:

As part of National Preparedness Month, we’ll be sharing information to help everyone become more familiar with the new system.

Stay tuned for more information as we move forward with installation and testing of the new countywide warning system.

Stay weather aware this evening!

Thunderstorms are starting to develop in our area. Radar currently indicates a strong storm in the northern part of our county that could impact Snyder and surrounding areas in the near future. The storm shows to have gusty winds and the potential for hail up to penny size. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is also occurring with this storm.

September is Emergency Preparedness Month

As we prepare for a new weather and fire warning system later this month, now is a great time to make sure you and your family are prepared for emergencies.

Here are three simple things you can do:

MAKE A PLAN
Know how your family will communicate, where you will meet, and where you will go if you need to evacuate.

BUILD A KIT
Keep essential supplies on hand, including water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, pet supplies and important documents.

STAY INFORMED

As fall sports season gets underway, families and fans will be gathering around our community to enjoy games, and other events.

Take a few moments to think about the simple things that can help make your outing safer:

PARKING & YOUR SURROUNDINGS
Stay aware as you walk to and from the facility. Watch for vehicle traffic, changing light conditions, uneven surfaces, and other potential hazards.

KNOW THE FACILITY
Take a moment to look around and become familiar with the facility you're visiting. Pay attention to entrances, exits, posted rules, and areas where you may need to navigate around crowds or traffic.

HAVE A MEETING PLACE
If you're attending with family or friends, especially children, consider choosing a place to meet if someone gets separated from the group.

Most importantly, enjoy the game and enjoy being part of our community.

A little awareness before and during an event can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.

Residents may notice a haze or smell smoke in the Snyder area due to changing wind directions associated with the Palo Pinto and Jack County wildfires.

At this time, these wildfires do not pose a threat to Scurry County. Smoke and haze may still be noticeable as wind conditions change.

Residents with breathing conditions or allergies may want to consider limiting prolonged time outdoors while smoke is present.

There is currently no need to report the smoke or haze to the Snyder Fire Department unless you observe an actual fire or other immediate emergency.

We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if the situation changes.

What if your vehicle broke down on the way to work, school, or running errands?

Many roadside breakdowns can be prevented by paying attention to the warning signs before you leave home.

Before you head out, take a moment to:

Don't ignore dashboard warning lights or maintenance reminders.
Check your vehicle's app or in-vehicle alerts if your vehicle is equipped with them.
Respond to manufacturer recall notices promptly—they're issued to address safety-related issues.
Do a quick walk-around of your vehicle. Look for low tires, fluid leaks, or anything that doesn't look right.

It's also a good idea to keep a few emergency essentials in your vehicle:

Jumper cables
A flashlight
Drinking water
A basic first aid kit
A phone charger or power bank

Finally, save these important numbers in your phone before you need them:
A trusted family member or friend
Your preferred towing or roadside assistance provider
Your insurance company's roadside assistance number, if included with your policy

This week's challenge: Before your next trip, even if it's just across town, take one minute to walk around your vehicle and make sure you're road-ready.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the cooling center location has changed. Today, the cooling center will be located at the Scurry County Library located at 1916 23rd St, Snyder, TX 79549.

The cooling center offers:

Water
Tables and chairs
Wall outlets for charging phones and other technology devices

Service animals are welcome.

If you need a cool place to take a break from the heat, stop by the Scurry County Library and stay cool and hydrated.
