New Traffic Cone Lights

This year, SLVFD Chief Harry is focusing on Firefighter Safety and Scene Safety with implementing new and upgrading our equipment.
New Traffic Cone Lights have recently been added for scene safety not only for our Firefighters, but also for our CERT Team. Also, Extrication Tool straps were purchased to assist with carrying 45 pound Extrication Tools.
More had been planned, but we are still recovering financially from ICE STORM FERN.
We co-hosted a VES Training led by Ashland’s Captain Matthew McBride. We will be actively incorporating more state training this year with our North Central MS mutual aid partners including other counties.

***** VES TRAINING *****
3/17/2026 Firefighters from around Benton County gathered at Snow Lake Vol Fire Dept to participate in a VES (vent, enter, search) exercise with live smoke and heat. Members entered a heated building in search of a downed patient (drag dummy) and practiced on removing a victim from a house fire. As well as trained on a mayday call with a firefighter down (live fireman). Was a great and active group from your local Benton County fire departments that attended.

Spring Home Maintenance

Spring begins Friday, March 20, and serves as a good reminder to maintain your home.

Cleaning out gutters, checking for dead trees, and looking for fire hazards are just some of the tasks to be done inside and outside of your home.

Outside your home:

* Check your roof for broken or missing shingles. Replace shingles to avoid leaks.
* Look for damaged wood and sealants around windows and doors that keep out animals, pests, wind, heat, and cold. If you have ever had a squirrel in your attic, you will never forget that experience.
* Properly sealing doors and windows could also save you money on your electric bill.
* Clean gutters to avoid leaks on walls and ceilings.
* Walk around your home looking for dead trees that should be removed or downed limbs on your roof.
* Clean up leaves, limbs and branches.

Inside your home:

* Check your attic for dampness and seal cracks.
* Check water heaters for signs of corrosion or leaks.
* Replace HVAC filters so the AC is ready to run. Schedule a checkup or service.
* Make sure outlets and cords are in good working order and are not overloaded. This could prevent an electrical fire. Last year our Fire Dept responded to 5 fires that were extension cord related.
* Check and replace smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers as needed. If you need a smoke alarm, please contact Fire Chief Harry at 662-486-8873.

Jay Kimery:

Extrication training hosted by Snow Lake Fire Rescue this week. 28 volunteers from multiple Benton County Fire & Rescue departments are attending. Over the next 3 nights we will learn what we need to effectively and safely preform extrication on vehicles and train on multiple crash scenarios and bring us up to speed on new model vehicle hazards for rescuers and electric vehicle dangers. This all goes hand in hand with the extrication training & tool introduction we had last month hosted by Ashland Fire. This class is a Mississippi Fire Academy Certification Course and will give MSFA training and credit hours to our volunteers. Man I love to see all these volunteers doing this for the community! So much effort and time is given by all these people. For free.
