In Smithville, keeping your lawn in check is more than just about "curb appeal"—it’s actually a local requirement. According to city ordinances, grass and weeds must be kept under 12 inches in height. This rule is in place primarily for public health and safety; tall grass is a five-star hotel for rodents, snakes, and mosquitoes, and during our dry Texas summers, overgrown lots can quickly become serious fire hazards. Keeping things trimmed helps keep the whole neighborhood safer and more comfortable for everyone.
If a property falls out of compliance, the city usually starts with a notification to give the owner a chance to mow it. However, if the issue isn't resolved, the fines can add up quickly. Citations for high grass can result in fines ranging from $100 to $2,000 per day that the violation continues. Additionally, if the city has to send a crew out to mow the lot themselves, the property owner will be billed for the labor and equipment costs, often with an added administrative fee. It’s definitely much cheaper (and neighborly!) to keep the mower gassed up and ready to go.
