As indicated in the original post, warrants were secured for the suspect and he turned himself in to SPD, he is being transported to the Bastrop County jail.

Public Information

On 05/24/26 officers with the Smithville PD were involved in a pursuit that ended on Mountain Valley Road in rural Bastrop County. The driver exited the vehicle and ran into a wooded area. Officers conducted a search of the immediate area to include assistance with a drone from an assisting agency. The suspect was not located during this search. Upon inventory of the suspect vehicle officers located ma*****na, alcoholic beverages and a pistol magazine. At no time did the subject brandish a firearm nor did either officer observe the suspect to be in possession of a weapon. I am in the process of reviewing all video and speaking with the officers who worked the pursuit as it has been brought to my attention that they may have communicated to residents in the area that the subject may be armed and or dangerous.
After the scene was cleared on Mountain Valley Rd. the officers continued to investigate and identify the driver after talking to subjects at a residence in town. Based upon information obtained and the officer’s own observations they were able to conclude who they believe the driver was. They spoke to family members of the suspect who validated that the car was his.
On 05/25/26 a suspicious person was reported on the railroad tracks in the area of FM 2571 and Live Oak St. Officers responded and the subject fled on foot and was not located. The subject reportedly matched the description of the subject who fled the day before.
Concerns were relayed to me that residents were frustrated at the lack of information being released by the PD about the situation and for that I offer my sincerest apologies. I can certainly understand that if some residents believed via whatever information that they received that this subject was armed and dangerous and they weren’t notified that this would be an issue for concern. At no time do I believe anyone was in danger other that the reckless driving by the suspect during the pursuit. If there was a clear and immediate danger to the public I am certain that door-to-door notifications would have been conducted in the affected area. The initial reason for this traffic contact was a broken front windshield.
Warrants for the suspect’s arrest are forthcoming. I have communicated with the suspect and he has agreed to cooperate with turning himself in once the warrants are issued. I will provide and update once this occurs.

Respectfully,

David Repka - Chief of Police

INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Theft $30k to $150k- Non-Profit enhancement

In November it was reported to the Smithville Police Department that a prior Smithville VFD treasurer may have stolen money from the FD. An investigation was conducted over several months to include a forensic audit of SVFD financials and bank account. Also subpoenas for financial records from several entities were served and records were reviewed.
Based upon the above investigation a warrant was obtained for the former SVFD treasurer, John Johnson for Theft $30k to $150K- Non-Profit.
On the morning of 04/16/26 SPD personnel traveled to Alvin, Tx where Johnson currently resides and executed the arrest warrant. Johnson was interviewed and agreed to speak with us. He admitted to taking the money ultimately providing an oral and written confession.
It should be noted that the all of the funds stolen from the SVFD were specifically taken from the SVFD fundraiser associated account and no funds were stolen from any City of Smithville provided funds.
