Our partners at the National Weather Service Raleigh and N.C. Forest Service have placed Johnston County under EXTREME Fire Danger today due to dry conditions and wind.

The message is simple: Avoid burning, and be very cautious with anything that could cause a spark – including machinery and farm equipment.

Increased Risk of Wildfire Due to Elevated Fire Danger -- Thursday, June 18, 2026

The National Weather Service has issued fire danger statements for central and eastern North Carolina. What does increased fire danger mean for you today?

🎯 Fires can start from the smallest spark.
🎯 Dry conditions and wind increase fire spread.
🎯 Everyday activities carry more risk right now.

Avoid burning, and be cautious with anything that could cause a spark. Properly dispose of smoking materials such as ci******es. Be extremely careful with machinery and farm equipment when working outdoors.

Our Emergency Management Division received a $25,000 Duke Energy Storm Preparedness Grant today to purchase 250 emergency preparedness kits for vulnerable residents. 💵

The kits will include: a weather radio, a fan for relief from heat, a cooler for storing medications, a fire- and water-resistant folder to protect important documents, and a thumb drive to hold backups of important documents and photos.

Mearle, our JoCo Preparedness Squirrel, made a special appearance to remind visitors to be prepared for all types of emergencies.

Today we graduated the second class of the Rising Responders Academy. We're so proud of these 13 students who have spent the week exploring the field of emergency services.

The Rising Responders Academy is geared towards middle school students and showcases the 3 disciplines of emergency services present in Johnston County – Emergency Medical Services, Fire Marshal, and Emergency Management.

Representatives from the Johnston County Sheriff's Office and Johnston County 911 also participated in showcasing their efforts in keeping our county safe and prepared.

Our EMS, Fire Marshal, and Emergency Management Divisions presented on a range of topics including local emergency protocols, hazard mitigation planning, communication systems, and how businesses can align with county response efforts.
