🚌 Ready or not… the school buses are coming! 🎒

School starts this Tuesday in Isle of Wight County, which means buses will be back on the roads, kids will be at bus stops, and our morning commutes may take a few extra minutes.

A couple of friendly reminders from the Smithfield Police Department:

🛑 Know when you’re required to stop for a school bus — those flashing red lights aren’t a suggestion!

👀 Keep an eye out for children and buses, especially during the morning and afternoon hours.

🚗 Expect additional traffic congestion on West Main Street near Westside Elementary School during drop-off and pick-up. Give yourself a little extra time and bring along some patience.

📵 Phones down, eyes up, and please slow down.

A few extra minutes on your commute are worth it to keep our kids safe.

🚨 VIN ETCHING — BECAUSE CAR THIEVES DON’T NEED YOUR HELP! 🚨

The Smithfield Police Department, in partnership with the Virginia State Police HEAT Program, will be hosting its first-ever VIN-Etching Event:

📅 Saturday, September 12, 2026
⏰ 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
📍 1403 S. Church St., Smithfield, VA, in the parking lot of the Smithfield DMV.

🔎 So, what exactly is VIN etching?

Your vehicle’s VIN is permanently etched onto its windows. For you, the lawful owner? No big deal.

For a car thief trying to disguise, part out, or illegally resell your vehicle? That’s where it gets annoying.

Etched glass provides another visible identifier tied directly to your vehicle and can mean additional time, expense, and risk for a thief trying to conceal a stolen vehicle.

We can’t promise a car thief will look at your etched windows and reconsider all of their life choices…but making their job harder is a pretty good start.

The Smithfield Police Department, in partnership with the Town of Smithfield, is excited to announce the inaugural PB&J Collection Challenge to benefit our local food banks. This collection will run from September 14th to October 1st. We invite you to help us combat hunger in the 757 area.

We are only accepting donations of peanut butter and jelly. Please drop off your contributions in the lobby of the Smithfield Police Department during normal business hours, which are Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM. Thank you for your support!

On August 17, 2026, the Smithfield Police Department began investigating a reported burglary in the area of Astrid Street.

Through the course of the investigation, officers and detectives identified a suspect and developed probable cause related to the burglary.

On August 18, 2026, the Smithfield Police Department obtained arrest and search warrants related to the investigation. The warrants were subsequently executed, and Devin Jarrett, 40, of the Woods Edge Apartments, was taken into custody.

During the ex*****on of the search warrant, investigators recovered stolen currency and additional items of evidence related to the burglary.

Jarrett was charged in connection with the burglary and is being held without bond.

The Smithfield Police Department is committed to keeping our community informed about the technology we use to help keep Smithfield safe.

We are proud to announce the launch of our Flock Safety Transparency Portal, giving the public a closer look at how our Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology is being used.

Through the portal, community members can view information such as:

Flock Safety usage statistics
How long data is retained
Policies and safeguards governing the system
Information about searches and system use
Examples of how this technology has assisted our agency

Flock Safety has become an important investigative tool for our department, assisting with criminal investigations while providing safeguards and accountability around its use. The Transparency Portal provides another way for our community to see how this technology is being utilized.
