Our Mission
The mission of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island is to protect birds, other wildlife and their habitats through conservation, education and advocacy, for the benefit of people and all other life. Who We Are
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is an independent, not-for-profit environmental organization dedicated to statewide environmental education, conservation and advocacy. Establi

shed in 1897, it is the oldest environmental organization in the state. Audubon is one of the largest environmental educators in Rhode Island, reaching well over 20,000 students of all ages each year. Since acquiring its first wildlife refuge in 1924, Audubon Society of Rhode Island has grown to become one of the largest private landholders in Rhode Island. It now protects nearly 10,000 acres of wildlife habitat for future generations of Rhode Islanders. Many Audubon wildlife refuges are open to the public for wildlife viewing and enjoyment. Its vigilant advocacy programs and partnerships have kept the public and government informed of threats to the environment for over 100 years. Members of Audubon are kept informed through the Report, and eWing, our monthly email newsletter. Please consider joining the thousands of committed Audubon Society of Rhode Island members as we preserve and protect our precious environment together. Audubon Society of Rhode Island is not affiliated with the National Audubon Society.

Meet our newest avian ambassador, Willow!

Over 350 votes were cast in the naming of our new American Kestrel, with Willow being the overwhelming winner.

Willow was found with an injured left wing after a presumed vehicle strike. After months of rehabilitation, she is still unable to fly. As an animal ambassador at RI Audubon, she will accompany our educators on programs, creating memorable connections and inspiring people to protect birds and their habitats.

While Willow only weighs 3 ounces, feeding her and keeping her healthy is expensive. With modified mews, special diets, and veterinary care, our Animal Ambassadors cost about $45,000 each year.

Please welcome Willow (and support our other ambassadors) with a donation: https://bit.ly/3SmiQFi

Audubon’s highest-priority legislative initiative has now been passed by both chambers of the Rhode Island General Assembly, putting RI on track to become just the second state in the nation to ban deadly anticoagulant rat poisons! We look forward to keeping you updated as this legislation continues to move forward to Governor McKee's desk for his signature.

We would like to thank the bill sponsors, Rep. Rebecca Kislak - Dist. 4 RI and Senator Melissa Murray, for stewarding this important legislation. We are also grateful for the advocacy of our friends at Congress of the Birds, Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Land Trust Council, and so many others who helped move this bill forward.

Most importantly, we have all of you to thank! Thousands of you took action by sending letters and emails to legislators, signing our online pledge, sharing information with friends and neighbors, and helping build momentum for this important cause.

Because of your advocacy, Rhode Island is closer than ever to becoming a national leader in protecting birds, wildlife, and the environment. By phasing out the use of harmful anticoagulant rodenticides, we will strengthen protections for raptors and other wildlife while encouraging more effective and sustainable approaches to rodent management.

Our bill to protect RI wildlife from anticoagulant rodenticides has been passed by the Senate and is now placed on the House floor for a vote on Wednesday, June 3rd! This House vote is needed to move this bill to the Governor’s desk.

RI Audubon has been working with both chambers of the General Assembly to pass this legislation, and we urge the members of the House to vote in favor of this bill. But most importantly, they need to hear from you, their constituents! Here are two ways you can help:

📝 Reach out to your Representative ahead of Wednesday's session and ensure that they are voting in support of H7222. Here are some tips and an example letter: https://bit.ly/4x1v2vb

👍 Spread the word. Reshare this post, tell your neighbors, text your friends. Everyone's voice is needed right now!

Thank you to everyone who has helped us advocate for this legislation by writing letters of support to legislators, informing community members of the importance of passing this legislation, and raising general awareness around this issue. Please join us in making one more push to get this legislation across the finish line!
