🚨E-BIKE EDUCATION🚨
Due to the growing use of electric assist bicycles, some clarity is needed. Electric assist bicycles must follow the same laws as a pedal cycle.
1️⃣ First and foremost, you MUST be 16 years of age or older to operate an e-bike.
2️⃣ E-bikes must be operated as far right of the roadway as practical. (This means you cannot ride in the middle of the road). E-bikes must also travel with the flow of traffic.
3️⃣ If a vehicle is turning right, they cannot interfere with a pedal cycle or e-bike proceeding straight.
4️⃣ When riding an e-bike or pedal cycle between sunset and sunrise, the bike must have a front lamp emitting white light which is visible from 500 feet to the front. E-bikes and pedal cycles must also have a red reflector light on the rear which is visible from 500 feet. Lastly, the vehicle code requires amber reflectors on both sides of the bike.
5️⃣ E-bikes and pedal cycles are permitted on sidewalks as long as the person riding a pedalcycle upon a sidewalk or pedalcycle path used by pedestrians yields the right-of-way to any pedestrian and gives an audible signal before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.
A person shall not ride a pedalcycle upon a sidewalk in a business district unless permitted by official traffic-control devices, nor when a usable pedalcycle-only lane has been provided adjacent to the sidewalk.
6️⃣ A person operating an e-bike or pedal cycle shall not wear headphones or earbuds.
🚨Abiding by these laws will cut down on e-bike related accidents and traffic hazards!🚨
