Today, June 6th marks the anniversary of the allied invasion of Normandy and we once again revisit the incredible story of the late Ex-Chief George Heller. 82 years ago today around midnight, Ex-Chief Heller was en-route with Dog Company, 2nd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division as they jumped behind enemy lines to secure crucial objectives just hours ahead of the largest amphibious assault in history we know as D-Day.

George went on to jump in Operation Market Garden and ultimately was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and came home to continue his service to his community as a volunteer firefighter. He was Chief from 1967-1969 and was a 56 year life member of our department.

Please take a moment to watch Mr. Heller's remarkable story and also take a moment to thank our amazing Veterans for the freedom we enjoy today.

This weekend, some of our members, led by Firefighter Brandon Bates, went out to honor our fallen firefighters by placing firefighter flags next to the graves. They put out about 30 flags on graves. This is a great way to remember and honor our past. Thank you to those members who went out to take care of our history.

Sixteen‑year‑old Anahis Gomez becomes the Sloatsburg Fire Department’s first female firefighter in its 103‑year history.

Today we recognize and celebrate Chief Matthew Swanson as he concludes his tenure as Chief of Department for the Sloatsburg Fire Department (2023–2026).

Chief Swanson’s service to our department spans nearly three decades, beginning in 1997, and advancing into the officer ranks in 2009. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to the safety of our community have left a lasting impact on our organization.

During his time as Chief, he placed a strong emphasis on strengthening our capabilities in wildland fire response, vehicle extrication, and water rescue. Through his efforts, our department has enhanced both its equipment and training, ensuring we are better prepared to meet the evolving challenges of emergency response.

His steady leadership, forward-thinking approach, and unwavering commitment to the members of this department will not be forgotten.

On behalf of the entire Sloatsburg Fire Department, thank you Chief Swanson for your years of service, your leadership, and your dedication to this community.

We wish you continued success and look forward to your continued involvement in the department.

As our community continues to grow and present new challenges, Sloatsburg Fire Department is committed to evolving with it. From rugged terrain to hard to reach reach areas, our firefighters must be ready for anything.

With that in mind, we are excited to introduce upgrades to our 15-Rescue enhancing our capabilities to better serve our residents no matter the conditions.

We remain ready, adaptable, and always prepared to answer the call.

Tomorrow marks the 5 year anniversary of the untimely death of our dear brother Jared Lloyd of the Columbian Engine Co. #1

We are sadly here to report that not a single thing has changed as a result of his death. In fact, we've possibly gone backwards.

Code violations remain rampant throughout the County. Fines remain a mere slap on the wrist and just a cost of doing business.

The ultimate coward Rockland County District Attorney's Office Tom Walsh remains in power and continues to plea bargain and dismiss cases of those who break the law.

For years we spoke of “what will it take, for one of us to die?".

On March 23, 2021, that is exactly what happened.

Nothing happened as a result.

Nothing changed.

Business as usual. Politicians like Tom Walsh attending dinners and parades while our brother Jared lays in the ground.

We are at an incredible crossroads. We wish we could say something has got to give, but who are we kidding?

We implore our residents/followers to get involved in local and regional elections. Elections have consequences.

The entire County of Rockland is comprised of 100% volunteer fire departments. Please help us safely continue this tradition.

🏒Division I State Champions! 🏆

Congrats to the Suffern High School Boys Ice Hockey Team on winning the NYSPHSAA Division I State Championship.

This is their third straight Division I State Title.

Congratulations to the players, coaches, and families who helped make it all possible!

The Sloatsburg Fire Department was proud to attend the Knickerbocker Ice Festival to help demonstrate ice rescue techniques and cold-water safety for the community.

Our members showcased specialized equipment, proper rescue methods, and shared critical safety tips on what to do—and what not to do—if someone falls through the ice. Events like this are an important reminder that ice conditions can change rapidly, and preparation truly saves lives.

A big thank you to the Rockland Lake Fire Department for the invitation and for hosting a great community event focused on winter safety.

We were honored to support safety education at Rockland Lake State Park.

Last night, members of the Sloatsburg Fire Department spent hours in extreme cold weather clearing snow and ice from fire hydrants throughout the village. These efforts are critical to ensuring hydrants are immediately accessible in the event of a fire—when every second truly matters.

In the past, village residents have done a better job stepping up to clear hydrants, and we know our community can do it again. We are asking everyone’s help by clearing the fire hydrants on or near their own property.

When hydrants are buried or blocked, firefighters lose valuable time locating and accessing a water source, which can delay fire suppression and increase the risk to lives and property. Keeping hydrants clear is a shared responsibility and one of the simplest ways residents can directly support emergency response.

Thank you to our volunteers who braved the cold, and thank you to the residents who help keep Sloatsburg safe. 🚒❄️
