This past week and weekend, store owner Jody and her mom (and BWS employee) Hope, headed out to Idaho for a family wedding in the mountains! We flew into Boise and drove 3 hours to Stanley, Idaho for an amazing wedding on Redfish Lake in the Sawtooth Mountains. We loved the mountain views, the cool dry air and weather, spending time with our family and friends, and seeing some of the local birds and wildlife! Jody's cousin truly could not have picked a more beautiful spot to tie the knot and the weather was just perfect for our entire trip. We saw quite a variety of birds, some of which we do not have in our area and were first time sightings for us. Have any of you seen these birds on your travels? We cannot wait to go back to the mountains in the future to see what else the area has to offer!

We get a lot of customers in to the store that are interested in attracting crows to their yard and we always have some helpful suggestions to help entice them! First, go for a platform feeder that is open and raised high off of the ground. This ensures they can land and eat comfortably! Second, offer them several different food options on the platform! Their absolute favorite is peanuts in the shell (unsalted of course) but they also love fruit, grains, meat, and even dog and cat food. Third, try to eliminate anything in the direct area that makes a lot of noise, like windchimes or barking dogs. Crows are usually scared away by things like that. Fourth, try putting out shiny things or even better, shiny things that are UV sensitive! Crows, like most birds and bugs, see things differently than us and can visibly see the UV spectrum! Putting out items that are UV sensitive can help attract them in. Even with doing all of these things, it may take a long time for crows to call your area home! Animals, especially crows, are very smart and have had a rough history with human contact so they may take a long time to gain trust with. A lot of people think of crows as being "spooky" and it just so happens that around the end of October/November, crows from North of us migrate to our area to over-winter, creating large flocks that can be seen, and heard, far and wide! Fran Bires, local photographer and BWS consignment artist, caught this awesome shot of a crow hanging out and they really are magnificent. Stop on in to The Birdwatchers Store Monday-Saturday from 10-5 to see what we have for you!
