FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest sympathies on the passing of our dear friend and longest-standing member of the St Tammany DPEC, Mr. Patrick L. Miller.

Patrick was more than a colleague – he was a faithful advocate for change, equality, equal justice, and fairness for all. His unwavering commitment to the mission and values of DPEC was evident in everything he did over the past 15+ years. He brought both passion and purpose to our collective work, and his voice was a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for what is right.

Patrick’s devotion to our cause and the St Tammany community will be deeply missed. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry forward the work he believed in so deeply.

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with his family friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

With Heartfelt Sympathy,

Mr. Peter Lewis
Chair, St Tammany DPEC

Now that Mardi Gras is officially over it’s time to focus on the upcoming March 29 Municipal Primary Election and Ballot Initiatives. Heed the following and then listen to the video by our Treasurer, Erin Riecke Rowan.

The St. Tammany Democratic Parish Executive Committee, via our Legislative Committee and its Chair Dian McIlwain, recommends that you vote NO on all four constitutional amendments that appear on the March 29 ballot:

Amendment number 1 Provides for the Louisiana Supreme court to have sole jurisdiction to discipline out of state attorney and provides for the legislature to convene special courts to focus on specific issues such as oil and gas concerns and immigration.

The supreme already has the power to discipline out of state attorneys so this amendment is not necessary. Allowing the legislature to convene courts puts too much power in the hands of the legislative branch of the government.

VOTE NO

Amendment 2 addresses taxes and is a very complicated proposal. The amendment would result in the following:
1. Eliminate several constitutionally protected funds for k through 12. It would not guarantee additional funding for teacher pay raises.
2. Remove tax exemption from non-profits such as hospitals, schools, unions, social and pleasure clubs
3. Put spending limits on education and health. Providing for any surplus funds to go the general fund for one time projects
4. Limit local control of sales taxes
5. Delete a fund supporting infant mortality programs
6. Change gender pronouns
7. Increase taxes on take-out food
8. Remove authorization for farmers' and fishermen's programs

VOTE NO

Amendment 3 would change who decides which crimes are serious enough for children under 17 to be tried as adults
1. Remove specific crimes such as murder and armed robbery
2. Let the legislature to decide which crimes would require trial as a adult and allow them to change these over time
3. Would result in children under 17 to go to prison at a higher rate

VOTE NO

Amendment 4 is a companion. It would allow the legislature to determine when judges for special courts would be elected. Now the election of judges is a year from the time a vacancy occurs. This would allow the legislature to determine that the judges for special courts could run in the next election

VOTE NO

Sat Mar 15 to Sat Mar 22 is Early Voting ✅🗳
