15th Annual “Keep Slatington Beautiful” Town Cleanup Scheduled

Volunteers are needed for Slatington’s annual community cleanup day. The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission will sponsor the 15th Annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Clean-Up Day on Saturday, April 18, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Held in conjunction with Earth Day, the event will help beautify public recreation areas throughout the Borough of Slatington. Cleanup efforts will focus on borough-owned recreation facilities, including Walnut Street Playground, West End Playground, Victory Park, the Fishpond, Slatington Memorial Park, the Slatington Trailhead, and the Slate Heritage Trail from the Slatington Trailhead westward to the Washington Township boundary line.

The commission is seeking assistance from local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, area civic organizations, and members of the general public. Staging for the cleanup will take place at the Slatington Borough Maintenance Garage on West Church Street. Individuals and groups interested in participating are encouraged to call Robert at 610 554 4099, or message the Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission through Facebook Messenger.

With 2026 marking the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, extra emphasis is being placed on volunteerism and community improvement initiatives. Slatington residents are urged to take part in this meaningful community event, as one or two special cleanup projects are being planned. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided for all participants at the conclusion of the cleanup at a location to be announced. There is no rain date for this event; the cleanup will be held rain or shine, though heavy, steady rain will result in cancellation. “Help us keep Slatington clean, green, and beautiful.”

The cleanup originally scheduled for April was canceled at that time due to the Covid pandemic. The postponement and ongoing pandemic did not discourage volunteers however, as over 40 individuals participated in the cleanup of Slatington’s recreational areas.

The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission would like to thank the following businesses, individuals and civic groups for helping make the cleanup a huge success: Keith at Diggity Dog for donating French Fries and pierogies Mama’s Pizza for donating Hoagies, Matt Schmall for donating coffee and donuts from Dunkin Donuts, Cub Scout Troop #66, Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority - Lindsay Taylor, Slatington Rotary Club, The Northern Lehigh High School Interact Club, Giant Supermarket in Walnutport, and the Slatington Fire Department –manpower hauling away the collected garbage and larger items found in and along the trails and parks, and all the other individuals who helped in cleaning Slatington’s, parks, playgrounds and trails!

9th Annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Clean Up Day Canceled

The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission regrets to announce that the 9th Annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Clean-Up Day previously scheduled for Saturday April 25 has been canceled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The cleanup held yearly in conjunction with Earth Day helps beautify public recreation areas and the Slatington Business District along Main Street in Slatington.

Since many areas included in the cleanup are wooded, and vegetation grows in thick beginning in May, the event will not be rescheduled to a later date. However, since many residents are using the trails more frequently with time off from work, and the desire to get out of the house, the recreation commission urges residents to take a garbage bag along on their next outing and consider picking up trash on their walks. That way the spirit of the annual cleanup can be accomplished while at the same time maintaining social distancing.

Areas that had been scheduled to be cleaned this year were borough owned and operated recreation facilities in the borough and included the Walnut Street Playground, West End Playground, Victory Park, The Fish Pond, Slatington Memorial Park, Slatington Trailhead, and the Slate Heritage Trail from the Slatington Trailhead continuing westward to the borough line, along with portions of the D&L Trail in Slatington. If you frequent any of these areas on your walks or have some spare time please consider taking a few minutes and picking up litter and trash in these areas. Together we can Keep Slatington Beautiful!
