Hawk Watch Bird of the Week: Golden Eagle! This uncommon (and gigantic) raptor is just passing through our neck of the woods. (The eastern North American population of Aquila chrysaetos breeds in Canada and winters in the southern Appalachians.)

Both the Golden and the more common Bald Eagle are BIG birds, with long broad wings, held flat while soaring. How do you tell these big dark birds apart at a distance (or distinguish between juveniles, since young Bald Eagles lack the distinctive white head and tail?) If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a gleam from the Golden Eagle’s gold-colored nape (neck). Also, golds soar with wings in a slight dihedral (v shape), while Bald Eagles hold their wings perfectly flat, “like a plank.” Finally, a Golden Eagle’s head looks smaller in proportion to its body; it doesn’t stick out so far.

This species is most common during the second half of our hawk count season at Bake Oven K**b. Let us know if you spot one!

We're having a flash sale on our native plant seed bombs!🌱⚡️

Our latest batch of seed bombs were left out in the rain, oops! That means that they've sprouted, and are ready to plant RIGHT NOW! Stop by the Osprey House this week to pick some up for yourself and your local ecosystem.

Yearning to see this gorgeous bird IRL? Come on by . . . Lehigh Gap Nature Center is a top “birding hotspot” for the Blue Grosbeak. According to eBird, you‘re 89x more likely to spot one here than elsewhere in our region!

Why does this flamboyant member of the cardinal family spend the summer at the Gap? Credit our outstanding grassland habitat. AND credit the extensive work starting 20 years ago to restore a hillside denuded by fumes from a local industry. Stroll our Prairie Warbler Trail and try to spot one before they depart for their wintering grounds in Central and northern South America. (If the birds are elusive, you can still enjoy the Blue Grosbeak on our trailside mural!)

What’s in a name? This one is easy: Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), a common species of fungus around here AND around the world, really does look like the tail of a male turkey in full, fanned-out courtship splendor.

As for the scientific name, “Trametes” is from the Latin meaning “the flesh is thin.” That makes sense when you consider that members of this genus are so-called “shelf fungi,” growing in thin layers (like shelves) on dead trees and downed logs. The species name, “versicolor” means just what it sounds like: “multicolored.”

This mushroom is being studied as a source of useful medicinal compounds. But it’s already super useful in forest ecosystems, helping to break down dead wood and make nutrients available for other forest organisms.

Blueberries? Well, yes, they’re blue, and they‘re berries! Arrowwood Viburnum, a feature in our Pollinator Garden, had lovely white flowers this past spring.

Then pollinators worked their magic, and now the flower heads have turned into nutritious, fat-rich berries . . . just in time to fuel songbirds like Hermit Thrushes and vireos on their fall migration. Though birds digest these treats with ease, we don’t recommend that YOU sample them (you’re likely to get a stomachache). Plenty of other plants at the Gap are loaded with berries this time of year; tell us what you’ve spotted!
