The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Flood Watch in effect for Tompkins County until February 21, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. due to reported ice jams. The combination of recent rain and snowmelt will result in increased flow along rivers and streams in Tompkins County. An ice jam may cause water to infiltrate the lowlands along the river. Ice jams have been reported by county officials along the Fall Creek in Ithaca. The ice jam on Fall Creek is located near Beebe Lake and Cornell University in Ithaca. Continue monitoring updates to the forecast by visiting https://www.weather.gov/, then search for your zip code.

During a flood, water levels and the rate at which the water is flowing can quickly change. Most flood fatalities occur in vehicles. You don't know how deep the water is. Even when water recedes, the ground may be unstable.

Do not drive through flooded roadways.
NEVER drive around barricades!
Rising and fast floodwaters can sweep vehicles away or cause you to lose control of a vehicle.
Stay out of floodwater! Floodwaters hide dangers that can cause sickness, injury, or even death: animals and insects, live wires, dangerous chemicals, sewage, harmful bacteria, and sharp objects and debris.

Want to make sure that everyone is aware of changes that have been made to postmarking mail ... will also affect absentee voting, time-sensitive payments, etc.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) implemented a significant change to postmarking as of December 24, 2025, clarifying that machine-applied dates reflect when mail is first processed at regional centers, not when dropped off locally, potentially delaying the postmark by days. This impacts date-sensitive items like tax payments and donations, requiring people to mail such items much earlier or get a hand-stamped date in-person at the post office to meet deadlines, as the postmark date determines compliance under the "mailbox rule".

Safe Holidays to All

Dryden Firefighters want to remind you to be safe with Christmas decorations this holiday season.

Place Christmas trees away from heating devices, fireplaces, woodstoves and candles.

Do not overload electric outlets or cords.

If you enjoy a real tree vs artificial , be sure to keep it well watered.
Here’s a brief demonstration of a dry vs watered tree when caught on fire.

On this date, December 7, 1941, we pause to remember Pearl Harbor — a day that forever changed our nation. We honor the brave service members who stood in the face of unimaginable adversity and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication to our country will never be forgotten. Today, we reflect, we remember, and we reaffirm our commitment to preserving the legacy of all who served.

? The leading factor contributing to home cooking fires is unattended equipment per the U.S. Fire Administration. If you're cooking for Thanksgiving this week, keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop and use timers as a reminder to check on food you're cooking.
