Browntail Moth Update πŸ›

The latest browntail moth monitoring update from the Maine Forest Service and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry shows that caterpillars are now large enough to leave their webs and begin wandering in search of food or to escape predators and disease.

Researchers are also observing signs of naturally occurring viral and fungal pathogens affecting browntail populations at several monitoring sites, a hopeful sign as the season progresses.

If you find browntail caterpillars on your home, vehicle, or outdoor structures:

βœ”οΈ Use a strong stream of water to knock them off
βœ”οΈ Use a wet/dry vacuum with soapy water and a HEPA filter
βœ”οΈ Keep windows closed to prevent caterpillars and hairs from entering your home

Please help us thank and tag the Maine Forest Service and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry for their continued monitoring and public updates.

Browntail Moth Update: Caterpillars Are Beginning to Pupate

According to the latest update from the Maine Forest Service and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, many browntail moth caterpillars have reached full size and are beginning to create "pupal packets"β€”silken shelters where they will transform into adult moths.

These pupal packets may be found not only on trees and shrubs, but also on buildings, decks, vehicles, and outdoor equipment. They contain toxic hairs and should be handled with caution.

If removing caterpillars or pupal packets:
βœ”οΈ Wear protective clothing to avoid contact with hairs
βœ”οΈ Place them in a sealed container or plastic bag
βœ”οΈ Freeze or soak them in soapy water before disposal
βœ”οΈ Avoid handling them directly

Thank you to the Maine Forest Service and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry for their continued monitoring and public updates.

Media Monday: Growing Better Peppers Starts with Placement πŸ“°πŸŒΆοΈ

Our very own Ankit Singh was recently featured by Martha Stewart sharing tips on where gardeners should avoid planting peppers for healthier plants and better harvests.

β€œCrowding also reduces airflow, keeping leaves wetter for longer and increasing the risk of disease,” said Singh. β€œThe result is often smaller plants, fewer peppers, and more pest or disease issues.”

We're always proud to see the expertise of our Extension educators reaching audiences far beyond Maine and helping gardeners grow with confidence. 🌢
