🌱 Seeds of Hope Garden Update!

WE DID IT! This week we officially broke the 1,000-pound mark for 2026 - and we’re now at an incredible 1,333 pounds of food harvested!

Our biggest contributors so far? Tomatoes at 34% and cucumbers at 28% of our total harvest. That’s a whole lot of tomatoes and cucumbers!

One of our favorite moments this week was seeing a gardener use her ID tag to cut a cucumber so she could enjoy a few fresh slices right there in the garden. There’s something pretty special about seeing someone so excited about the food they’ve helped grow that they can’t wait to eat it!

We’re also looking ahead as the seasons change. We’re preparing the greenhouse for Swiss chard, adding compost and getting ready to move the plants in for winter growing. We’re also working on signs to bring the Seeds of Hope story into the school cafeterias where our produce is being enjoyed.

And we’re getting ready for the Common Ground Fair on September 25! We’ve been tending our flowers and preparing some special submissions for the exhibit hall. We can’t wait to see what the garden team brings home!

With cooler mornings arriving, there’s definitely a hint of fall in the air—but there’s still plenty growing, harvesting, and happening at Seeds of Hope. 🌱🍂

1,333 pounds and counting! 💚

🌱 Seeds of Hope Garden Update!

We are SO close! 🎉 After this week’s harvest, we’ve reached an incredible 968 pounds of food harvested in 2026 - just 32 pounds away from 1,000!

We also welcomed Kate and Viña from Cooperative Extension, who brought us some new gardening books to start our very own Seeds of Hope resource library and wild oat seed to use as a winter green manure.

The gardens are still going strong! We are knee-deep in tomatoes and peppers, while pumpkins and squash continue to grow and ripen. We are also looking ahead to winter, with plans to use the greenhouse to grow hardy greens like kale and Swiss chard. Our radishes are already popping up in the raised beds, too!

And the Seeds of Hope work continues beyond the garden. We’re working toward bringing ServSafe Food Handler certification to Somerset County Jail - a valuable skill that can help inmates build employment opportunities when they return to the community. 💚

So many pieces of this project continue to grow, and we couldn’t be more proud of what this team is accomplishing.
