Celebrate a piece of American history with a cold drink and great company! To mark the arrival of the rare Dunlap Broadside—the very first printing of the Declaration of Independence—at the Margaret Chase Smith Library, we’re hosting a Trivia Night at the Biergarden!

Grab a bite from the full food and drink menu while MCSL’s own John Taylor keeps you entertained. Test your knowledge across sports, music, pop culture, current events, and, of course, fun facts about the Declaration of Independence and Skowhegan’s legendary Margaret Chase Smith.

Bring your friends, bring your appetite, and bring your A-game—we can't wait to see you there!

"Without Labor we would be far below our wonderful standard of living and our unmatched and unparalleled American way of life. On behalf of the American people everywhere, today I salute you—I say our thanks to you—I say, ‘God bless you—we would not have our freedom today and our high standard of living if it were not for you and we know it."
-Senator Margaret Chase Smith, September 2, 1963

Check out this throwback staff photo taken in 2013, when we were celebrating Angie Stockwell's birthday and marking library anniversaries for Lynn King (23 years!) and John Taylor (1 year!). Take a guess which one is still working here.

In conjunction with the Dunlap Broadside (the first printing of the Declaration of Independence) coming to the Margaret Chase Smith Library, we are hosting a printmaking workshop with our friends at the Skowhegan Free Public Library. Colonial printmaking was the primary method for mass-producing texts, newspaper, and revolutionary imagery in the early America using relief woodcuts and intaglio plates. You can do the same by cutting you own stencil and printing your own work!

Kids will walk away with a full book of stamps.

The block printing workshop, led by Elizabeth Jabar from Hinge Collaborative, will take place on Saturday, September 26th, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. This is a 10+ age event, free, and spots are limited. Register at the link below!

in 1956, Senator Smith warmly welcomed the Skowhegan class of 1916 to her home—now part of our museum and library—for their special 40th High School reunion. It's amazing to think this year marks 110 years since she earned her high school diploma!
