One of our new end-of-year traditions this year was Move-Up Day!

Last week, students had the opportunity to visit the classrooms they’ll be in next year and spend time with their future teachers. The goal was simple: help students feel excited, confident, and ready for the next step in their educational journey.

Here are some of our current 2nd graders getting a preview of life as 3rd graders. They participated in team-building activities, met with our 3rd grade teachers, and got a chance to experience what next year will be like.

There were lots of smiles, laughter, and excitement as students began looking ahead to the fall. We hope this new tradition helps make grade-level transitions a little easier and gives students something to look forward to as they continue to grow and learn at Hood Canal School! 🐳📚💙

What a fantastic Field Day at Hood Canal School!

The weather could not have been better, and our students spent the day enjoying friendly competition, teamwork, laughter, and plenty of outdoor fun. Field Day is one of our favorite end-of-year traditions, and this year’s event was another great success.

A huge thank you to Dan Winter, our PE teacher, for coordinating the day and making sure every activity ran smoothly. We also appreciate Joe Stanley, our Maintenance and Grounds Specialist, for all of his support with setup, logistics, and the many behind-the-scenes details that help make an event like this possible.

This year, students also had the opportunity to participate in traditional Skokomish games led by our Tribal Tutors. We are grateful for their partnership and for sharing these meaningful cultural activities with our students.

Thank you as well to our parent volunteers and staff members who helped throughout the day. It truly takes a team to make Field Day happen, and we appreciate everyone who contributed to such a memorable experience for our students.

Here are some highlights from a great day at Hood Canal School!

What a fantastic day for our 8th Grade Picnic! A huge thank you to Mary Williams for preparing an amazing lunch for our students, complete with delicious fry bread. We are so grateful for the time, care, and generosity that went into making the meal so special.

We also want to extend our sincere appreciation to Hattie Williams and Jenna Adams for providing an unforgettable cedar canoe experience. And, of course, huge thanks to our middle school team for making these opportunities possible right up to the end of our students time here at Hood Canal.

As our 8th graders prepare for their next chapter, it was wonderful to celebrate together in such a meaningful way, making memories they’ll hold for years to come. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a day our students won’t soon forget! ❤️🖤🐋

Today we're proud to highlight one of our amazing 8th grade students, Bella Mihaila, as she prepares to take the next step on her educational journey.

Bella is one of 32 Hood Canal School students who will be promoting to high school this year, and we couldn't be more proud of all they have accomplished. As they prepare to leave our halls and begin a new chapter, we're excited to celebrate their achievements and the bright futures that lie ahead.

Bella's favorite quote is:

"You will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory."

As we approach promotion, that reminder feels especially meaningful. The memories our students have created here at Hood Canal School will stay with them long after they leave, and we are grateful to have been part of their journey.

Our 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony will be held on Monday, June 15, at 4:30 p.m. in the Hood Canal School gym. The ceremony is open to the public, and we invite our community to join us in celebrating Bella and the entire Hood Canal School Promoting Class of 2026.

Congratulations, Bella! We are proud of you and wish you and all of our promoting students the very best in high school and beyond.

Today, Mrs. Peck’s fourth-grade class took center stage and performed two plays for family members and guests. Students brought the beloved story The Great Kapok Tree to life and also performed an original production, The Principal’s New Clothes, set at Hood Canal School and featuring a student portrayal of our principal, Mr. Torres. Mr. Torres was in the audience and thoroughly enjoyed the performance!

The students worked hard to make their productions a success. They created their own props and masks, memorized their lines, and showcased their creativity, teamwork, and confidence in front of an audience.

Most importantly, they looked like they were having a great time! We are so proud of their hard work and thankful to Mrs. Peck for helping create such a memorable experience for our students and families.

Great job, fourth graders! 🎭👏

🚌 Celebrating Our Outstanding Bus Helpers! 🍕🎮

This week, our transportation team took time to recognize a special group of students who have gone above and beyond as bus helpers throughout the school year.

These students have helped younger riders, sat with students who needed support, assisted in keeping buses safe and calm, and served as positive role models for their peers. Their willingness to step up and help has made a real difference for both our drivers and fellow students.

As a thank you for their hard work, our bus drivers hosted a pizza and video game celebration in their honor.

We are incredibly grateful for these student leaders and the example they set every day.

👏 Congratulations to our 2025-26 Bus Helper Honorees:

📚🎉 Celebrating a Year of Reading Success at Hood Canal School! 🎉📚

This morning, our students gathered for a special reading celebration assembly hosted by our amazing librarian, Ms. Melanie Lankford, recognizing the incredible reading accomplishments achieved throughout the school year.

Students were honored for a variety of achievements, including participation in reading challenges, books checked out from the library, reading minutes logged, and special recognition from their classroom teachers. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the hard work, growth, and enthusiasm our students have shown for reading.

One of the highlights of the assembly was recognizing our five top readers, who each received a brand-new bicycle generously donated by the Union City Masonic Lodge. We are incredibly grateful to the Masons for their continued support of our students and for helping make reading even more rewarding.

The growth we’ve seen in our reading program has been remarkable. Just a few years ago, students checked out approximately 2,000 books. Last year, that number grew to 4,000 books, and this year our students checked out more than 5,100 books!

We’ve also seen tremendous success with our new reading incentive program through Beanstalk. When we launched the program, the recommended goal was 100,000 minutes of reading. Our students didn’t just meet that goal—they more than doubled it, logging over 260,000 minutes of reading this year!

These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our students, the support of our families and staff, and the leadership of Ms. Langford, who has worked tirelessly to make reading fun, engaging, and meaningful for every student.

Congratulations to all of our readers on an outstanding year. Keep turning those pages and discovering new adventures through books! 📖❤️🐋 Masonic Lodge

Our Transitional Kindergarten students are getting ready for a big milestone!

This week, our TK class celebrated their Moving Up Celebration as they prepare for kindergarten next year. Families joined us for a wonderful afternoon filled with smiles, laughter, and special memories.

Students enjoyed lunch and cake together, spent time playing with friends and family, and had the chance to explore our new covered preschool and kindergarten playground area. It was a joy to see our youngest learners celebrating all they have accomplished this year and looking ahead to the exciting adventures that await them in kindergarten.

A special thank you to Ms. Cathy for helping organize this memorable celebration and for all she does to support our students each day.

Congratulations, future kindergarteners! We can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll do next year. 🐳💙
