🛴 🚴🏿 New Illinois Micromobility Law

On August 26, Governor Pritzker signed SB 3484 into law as Public Act 104-0854, establishing new statewide standards for e-bikes, e-scooters, and other electric micromobility devices, such as e-skateboards and e-unicycles.

When the new law takes effect on January 1, 2027:

* Riders of Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes (up to 20mph) must be at least 15 years old.

* Class 3 e-bike riders (up to 28 mph) must be at least 16 years old.

* Higher-speed e-bike (over 28 mph) and e-moto riders must be at least 16 and have a valid driver’s license, title, registration and insurance.

* All e-scooter riders must be at least 16 years old.

* E-bikes and e-scooters will be prohibited from sidewalks statewide.

SKOKIE POLICE DEPARTMENT JOINS STATEWIDE LABOR DAY TRAFFIC SAFETY EFFORT FOCUSED ON IMPAIRED, DISTRACTED, AND UNSAFE DRIVING

Skokie, IL – The Skokie Police Department is proud to be one of over 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois participating in the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns this Labor Day. From Aug. 14 through the early morning hours of Sept. 8, officers will be out in force, focused on stopping impaired driving, enforcing seat belt laws and reducing other dangerous driving behaviors.

“Driving under the influence — whether it’s alcohol, cannabis or any other impairing drug — is not just risky, it’s illegal,” said Sgt. Melissa Russell. “We’ll be patrolling with zero tolerance for impaired driving, because our goal is to protect the people of Skokie.”

Officers will also be enforcing seat belt laws as part of the “Click It or Ticket” initiative. Buckling up is the most effective way to prevent serious injury or death in a crash. Everyone in the vehicle — front seat or back — should be properly buckled, every trip.

In addition to alcohol, officers will be on the lookout for drivers impaired by cannabis and other drugs. Messages like “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” are part of a statewide education and enforcement effort aimed at saving lives.

“We want our community to enjoy the holiday weekend safely and responsibly,” said Sgt. Melissa Russell. “Plan ahead, use a designated driver, and never get behind the wheel impaired. These decisions save lives.”

This local effort is part of a larger statewide campaign supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation, which administers the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns with federal highway safety funds. The initiative is reinforced by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign running across radio, TV and digital platforms to highlight the deadly consequences of impaired driving.

MISSING PERSON:
The Skokie Police Department is requesting the help of the public in locating Ramon Martinez.
Martinez was last seen on August 17, 2026, at approximately 2:00a.m. in the 8200 block of East Prairie Rd, Skokie, Illinois.
Martinez is described as a 78-year-old male, 5’7”, 157 lbs., with white hair and a white beard.
Martinez's clothing description was a white T-shirt and possibly pink shorts.
If you know the whereabouts of Martinez, observe a subject matching his description, or have ANY information that could aid investigators in locating him, call 9-1-1 immediately.

August 12, 2026 - PRESS RELEASE

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

SKOKIE, IL – On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 11:07 p.m., Skokie Police officers responded to a person shot in the area of the 7400 block of McCormick Boulevard.

Skokie Police arrived on scene and located a 31-year-old male victim in the area of Howard Street and McCormick Boulevard who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. First aid was provided by emergency personnel, and the victim was transported by Skokie Fire personnel to a local hospital for further medical treatment. The victim did not survive the injuries.

A preliminary investigation into the circumstances of this incident indicates that it was not a random act. There is no known threat to the public. The investigation is active, and additional details will be provided as the investigation allows.

The North Regional Violent Crimes Task Force (NORTAF) was activated and is assisting the Skokie Police Department with the investigation.

August 7, 2026 - PRESS RELEASE

SKOKIE POLICE DEPARTMENT RELEASES FOURTH OF JULY ENFORCEMENT RESULTS

Skokie, Illinois – The Skokie Police Department made four (4) traffic arrests and issued 25 seat belt citations during the recent Fourth of July Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket safety campaigns,” said Sergeant Melissa Russell.

Other citations issued during the campaign were 16 speeding citations, eight (8) distracted driving citations, seven (7) no insurance citations, and 31 other citations.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participated in this statewide effort to get drunk and drugged drivers off our roads and encourage seat belt use.

Skokie Police Department joined forces with more than 200 other state and local law enforcement agencies conducting the crackdown, which featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities including a media campaign.

The Illinois Independence Day enforcement campaign is funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies across the state. It’s reinforced with IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign, which shares real stories of Illinois residents lost in fatal crashes.
