🚧 Church Road & Skippack Pike Intersection Update 🚧
Over the past several months, Skippack Township has been investigating the conditions at the intersection of Church Road and Skippack Pike. What initially appeared to be a relatively straightforward repair has turned out to be a much larger infrastructure issue.
🔎 What We Found
Our Public Works crew originally identified a serious concern with the storm sewer inlet on the northeast corner of the intersection. The old brick inlet box was showing signs of collapse.
Further evaluation revealed that the problem goes beyond the inlet itself. A video inspection of the storm sewer system showed significant deterioration in portions of the existing pipes. Given the condition of the surrounding infrastructure, simply repairing the inlet would not provide a responsible, long-term solution.
🛠️ The Project Has Expanded
As the Township continued its evaluation, we identified additional improvements that should be addressed as part of the project, including:
• Replacement and improvement of deteriorated storm sewer infrastructure
• Upgrades to the ADA pedestrian ramps to meet current accessibility standards
• Improvements to longstanding drainage issues and the low point at the intersection
• Coordination with PennDOT regarding its drainage system within the state highway
PennDOT has indicated that its maintenance team is willing to cooperate with the Township, although its available resources do not allow it to undertake the larger improvements needed within Township roadways.
📐 Moving Toward Design & Construction
Because the scope of the project has grown significantly, the work is expected to exceed the threshold requiring a formal public bidding process.
Township staff have completed a field survey, including detailed information about the existing storm sewer system and pedestrian ramps. Traffic Planning & Design (TPD) is currently working on the highway design.
Once the plans are complete, the Township will move forward with the public bidding process.
🚗 What About the Road Right Now?
The metal plate currently in place has stabilized the roadway and appears to have avoided the need for an emergency repair. Our Public Works crew continues to closely monitor the area.
If conditions deteriorate or additional action becomes necessary before the project can be bid and construction begins, the Township will take the appropriate steps to protect the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
The Bottom Line
What began as a concern involving a failing storm sewer inlet has given us the opportunity to address a much larger infrastructure issue.
By tackling the storm sewer system, drainage problems, and ADA ramps together, the Township can work toward a more comprehensive and lasting improvement to this important intersection.
