Alaskans Own

Alaskans Own Premium Alaska seafood. Alaska's 1st Community Shared Fishery. Contributing to the greater good is at the heart of Alaskans Own and who we are.

Sustainably harvested by local small boat fishermen from the pristine waters of Alaska. 100% of profits donated to fishery conservation programs and health & resilience program. Founded in 2010 by a group of commercial fishermen in Sitka, the Alaskans Own Community Supported Fishery (CSF) was created to help make Alaska seafood more accessible to Alaskans while also helping Alaska fishermen make a fair wage. In addition, Alaskans Own’s founders wanted their seafood sales to generate funding for the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association’s fishery conservation projects. In other words, they wanted Alaskans Own to benefit the wild fish and marine ecosystems that make Alaska’s fisheries possible. Over the years, Alaskans Own has been a leader in the sustainable seafood movement, promoting small-boat fishing families and educating seafood buyers about the benefits of buying frozen fish. We’ve also helped address food security issues throughout Alaska and the Northwest, delivering more than 600,000 donated Alaska seafood meals in 2020. Alaskans Own’s founder and director, Linda Behnken, has been recognized with multiple awards for her leadership and contributions to fishery conservation, including:

• White House Sustainable Seafood Champion of Change Award (2016)
• Lowell Thomas Jr. Award for Outstanding Achievement (2019)
• Heinz Award for the Environment (2020)

Today, Alaskans Own remains a program of the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association - a non-profit organization - and 100% of Alaskans Own’s seafood sales goes towards projects that support conservation of Alaska’s fisheries, create equitable fishery access, and provide healthy seafood to communities in need. More than 10 years later, Alaskans Own remains committed to providing Alaska’s wild, sustainable seafood to families like yours and being a steward of Alaska’s wild fisheries for future generations.

Buying local seafood isn’t just good for you, it’s good for the local economy as well. When you buy directly from community-supported fisheries like Alaskans Own, you’re supporting local fishermen which means that you’re keeping your dollars in Alaska’s fishing communities.

According to the newest 2026 SeaBank Natural Capital Report, in Southeast Alaska, every dollar in resident fishery earnings generates $1.54 in total community revenue. For example, local earnings of over $231 million in 2022 generated $356 million. That community revenue helps sustain small businesses and makes our local communities strong. 💵🎣

ICYMI: Our 2026 SeaBank Natural Capital Report: Capturing the Economic and Ecological Value of Southeast Alaska is finally here and bigger and better than ever!! 🔥💫

Why does our team spend literally years researching, writing, and editing this exhaustive compilation of science and data about Southeast Alaska’s ecosystems?

Because it’s important for all of us to understand that Southeast Alaska’s natural capital (i.e., our “SeaBank”) goes beyond the fiscal.

🐟SeaBank’s dividends include clean drinking water and transportation corridors along with an abundance of nourishing foods such as fish, wild game, and berries.

🏔️SeaBank offers space for exercise, recreation, and the solitude and adventure that bolster mental and spiritual health.

🫶SeaBank is the heartbeat of Indigenous cultures, rhythms that touch everyone, everywhere regardless of heritage.

Explore the true value of SeaBank’s natural capital and ways we can help protect it. https://bit.ly/3VMEiF6

Spotlight: ALFA team member, Sara Beaber-Fujioka, ALFA’s Contract Grant Development and Management Specialist. Sara not only helps keep us straight with her impeccable attention to detail and spreadsheet wizardry, but her family has been part of Sitka’s fishing community for many years.

Favorite Product: King salmon pieces
Why you love this product: These are delightful pre-cut small pieces of premium quality fish, at a lower price than fillet portions, making them an outstanding value! The taste is decadent, it nourishes our bodies and brains, and it supports local fishermen in sustainably caught fisheries. Yay all around!

Favorite way to cook/eat it: So many great options! My go-to options for weeknight family suppers are stir fry or quick oven-roast on high, both with vegetables in the same pan. It’s easy to change up the flavor profile with different seasonings or sauces, and of course king salmon is so tasty on its own, it needs very little adornment. Yum!

A favorite moment from your work at ALFA: It’s really satisfying to be part of a team that supports fishermen in so many ways, working together to solve big and small challenges and strengthen resilient fishing communities. We facilitate fishermen having a voice in policy changes at the international, national, state, and local levels. We work with fishermen on strategies to address climate change and keep their businesses viable, from hybrid vessel propulsion conversions to marketing initiatives. We help young fishermen enter the workforce as crew members or build their own businesses as captains with fishing permits. Our office is also a social hub for fishermen (and their dogs) to stop in for a friendly hello, connection to resources, and sharing what’s on their minds.

Something you’re excited about right now: My daughter participated in ALFA’s Crew Training Program this summer on the F/V I Gotta and was thrilled to be out harvesting salmon and sharing stories on the water with a great captain and crewmates.

⭐ HOT OFF THE PRESSES!! ⭐

We are so pleased and proud to announce that the 2026 SeaBank Natural Capital Report: Capturing the Economic and Ecological Value of Southeast Alaska is finally here!

Our team of researchers, writers, editors, and designers have been busy over the last two years digging deep into the latest science and data regarding Southeast Alaska’s natural capital (our “SeaBank”). We hope that the report will inspire and inform local community members, visitors and policymakers to make sound long-term decisions that promote stewardship of our shared SeaBank.

How is the 2026 SeaBank Natural Capital Report different from previous SeaBank Reports?? Our 2026 SeaBank Report further expands the coverage of fish and wildlife species, particularly birds and forage fish, and highlights the value of SeaBank’s undersea “animal forests” — rich habitats created by corals, sponges and other living organisms that are essential for fish.

Step inside the SeaBank to learn more about the natural capital that sustains our communities, economy, and way of life…
