Sitkans Against Family Violence

Sitkans Against Family Violence SAFV - Sitkans Against Family Violence SAFV has two main areas of work: advocacy and prevention. We believe you can disagree without being disagreeable.

Sitkans Against Family Violence (SAFV) is a nonprofit organization that provides temporary shelter and empowerment-based safety and trauma-informed advocacy services for domestic and sexual assault victims/survivors of all genders, while promoting a community of nonviolence and respect. SAFV is located in the City and Borough of Sitka, Alaska, and serves Sitka, as well as the surrounding Southeast Alaska communities of Port Alexander, Kake, and Angoon. In our direct services work, SAFV's advocates work closely with victims of violence to help them re-build their lives, free from violence. In prevention, SAFV's specialists work to create systems and programs within our community that promote healthy relationships and respect in an effort to create a strong, thriving community where violence is outside the norm. Both advocacy and prevention are essential to ending violence within our community. SAFV’s goal for Facebook is to build a safe community for discussion and education. We hope that this site can provide an open, comfortable space for conversation. We aim to provide updates about SAFV events and programs, as well as raise awareness, increase knowledge, and provide educational tools about intimate partner violence and sexual assault. We will do our best to post disclaimers if a post may contain triggering language or information. However, we understand that some triggering items cannot be anticipated by us. If you are affected by any content on this page, we encourage you to reach out to SAFV advocates, who are available 24/7. Please call 907-747-3370 or our crisis line at 907-747-6511 or 1-800-478-6511 (toll-free in Alaska). In order to make this a safe community, we have a few rules for participation.
•Be respectful. That means no personal attacks, exclusionary or minimizing language, derogatory remarks, obscenities, name calling, vulgarity, libel, defamation, etc.
•No violence. SAFV will not tolerate any comments that are violent in any way. Once again, this means no personal attacks, derogatory remarks, or name calling. This also includes anything threatening or discriminatory, such as bullying, hate speech, sexism, racism, etc.
•Be constructive. Please keep your comments to the topic at hand, and try to move the conversation forward.
•When in doubt, use the Golden Rule. Treat others online the way you would like to be treated. Do not post comments you would not say directly to another person. Please consider how other people might react before you post.
•No spamming. Please help keep this page free of commercial endorsements; we will remove any post of this nature.
•SAFV abides by Facebook’s Terms and Conditions and asks you to do the same. You are solely responsible for the content you post. SAFV reserves the right to remove comments that, in our sole view, do not follow these guidelines, or suspend individual commenting privileges. If we take either of these actions, we will do our best to notify you. Keep in mind that SAFV cannot monitor this page 24/7, and we are not responsible for content posted by others. Please feel free to report any comment that violates these guidelines by messaging SAFV through Facebook. We welcome your interactions and want you to let us know what your thoughts and questions are, so that we can better serve your needs through this page.

We are having a food drive this Saturday from 10:00a to 3:00p at Sea Mart to help fill our pantry. We provide food boxes to anyone in the community who needs them, no questions asked, and the generosity of Sitkans helps us to do that. Gunalchéesh!

Today, on Orange Shirt Day, we come together to remember and honor the survivors and those lost due to the Indian Residential School system. This day is a powerful reminder of the resilience of Indigenous communities and the urgent need to address the generational trauma that continues to impact many, including those in Southeast Alaska. Generational trauma affects mental health and well-being, shaping the lives of individuals and communities in profound ways. It's essential to recognize how these historical injustices continue to impact health today so we can work towards a better tomorrow.

Sitka Tribe of Alaska and Outer Coast invite you to join us for our upcoming Orange Shirt Day Remembrance Event. We encourage all participants to wear orange, as well as to bring anything that reminds you of somebody you would wish to honor. We hope to see you there.
