Some of the people who support this department have been part of our story for years.

Others are just becoming part of it.

Our friendship with the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce started in the middle of the July 4th floods last year. We barely knew each other then, but they didn’t hesitate to ask how they could help. Since then, they’ve helped us make connections, learn a few things and find our place in a much bigger community.

Brevity Coffee Co. has been showing up for us since practically the day we met them, from our open houses to sharing what we’re doing and finding ways to support the people behind the department.

Wayne & Carla Thonsgard have a history here that goes back years. Carla served seven years as our Board Secretary, Wayne currently serves as a Trustee, and their gift baskets continue to be some of the most talked-about raffle items we have.

Hill Country Pottery has supported our raffles time and again, and if you’ve ever ended up with one of those SVFD mugs everybody loves, you already know his work.

And this year, we were glad to welcome two new donors into the mix: Tres Bella Salon and Tri-County Meat Market.

Different businesses. Different histories with us. Different ways of helping.

But every one of them chose to support a small volunteer fire department in Sisterdale, and we never want to treat that like a small thing.

Community doesn’t always stop at a district line, and neither does generosity.

To the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce, Brevity Coffee Co - Boerne, Texas, Wayne & Carla Thonsgard, Hill Country Pottery, Tres Bella Salon and Tri-County Meat Market: thank you for finding your own way to be part of this department’s story.

Some of these relationships go back years. Some are just beginning.

We’re honored to have every one of them.

Today, Kendall County has said goodbye to a woman who gave much of her life to serving it.

Judge Frieda J. Pressler served her community for nearly four decades through Kendall County EMS and as Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace, roles that made her a familiar part of life in Comfort and across Kendall County.

That is a remarkable legacy of service, and today, the fire and EMS community had the privilege of joining her family, friends and neighbors in honoring that legacy.

Today was simply about showing up to honor a woman who spent her life showing up for Kendall County. ❤️

Our thoughts are with Frieda’s family, friends, the Comfort community, our friends at Kendall County EMS, and every life she touched.

Rest peacefully, Frieda. Thank you for a lifetime of service. ❤️

September just does something to the light around here.

It’s still hot, and still very much Texas.

But late in the afternoon, the shadows start getting a little longer and, at just the right time, everything is washed in warm golden light for a few moments.

The roads. The pastures. The hills.

The things we see all the time.

They just look a little better somehow.

Maybe after a busy week, that’s enough.

A Sunday evening, a few quiet minutes, and a chance to notice some of the little things before Monday rolls around again.

They thought they were coming home.

They dropped off the kids and went to work. They grabbed coffee and boarded flights. They made plans for dinner and kissed someone goodbye.

At firehouses across New York City, firefighters reported for another Tuesday shift.

Nobody knew what that Tuesday would become.

Twenty-five years later, September 11 is a date in history books, photographs and stories for an entire generation that wasn’t there to see it.

But before any of that, it was people.

People who had plans for September 12.

People somebody loved.

People somebody waited for that night.

And people who, when everything changed, chose to help someone else.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the people who never came home, the people who did, the people who ran toward strangers, and the families who have carried that day ever since.

Because September 11 isn’t only something we promised never to forget.

It’s people we promised to remember. 🇺🇸

There’s no one way to support a volunteer fire department.

Sometimes it’s something donated for a raffle. Sometimes it’s helping us get the word out. Sometimes it’s putting your name behind an event or project. And sometimes it’s simply saying, “Sure, we’d be happy to help.”

Different people. Different businesses. Different ways of showing up.

But all of those yeses add up.

They help us raise the money it takes to train our volunteers, maintain our equipment, put fuel in the trucks, and keep this little department ready to serve.

Looks pretty green, doesn’t it?

Please don’t let that fool you.

You’ve seen quite a bit of fire activity on our page lately, including right here on 1888 — and we’d really rather not add another one.

So, if your Labor Day plans include a grill, a trailer or a little work around the property, keep an eye on what could spark.

Check those trailer chains. Be mindful of hot equipment and dry grass. And give anything involving an open flame a little extra attention.

A few extra seconds can save a whole lot of trouble.

Enjoy the day, Kendall County. Stay safe — and hopefully we’ll see you somewhere other than the side of the road. 😉
