Residential Structure Fire on North Bay Shore Drive

The Sister Bay & Liberty Grove Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 09:11 a.m. at 10708 North Bay Shore Drive in Sister Bay.

The fire occurred in a single-story residential building during the initial lighting of a water heater by a gas technician. The gas piping to the appliance had recently been replaced, and this was the initial gas fill and startup procedure. During the lighting process, a flash fire occurred around the base of the water heater, causing superficial burns to the face of the technician. The fire then migrated into the interior wall cavity where it began to spread.

The technician immediately contacted 911 and shut down the propane tank.

Units from the Sister Bay & Liberty Grove Fire Department responded to the scene with mutual aid assistance through MABAS from the Ephraim, Gibraltar, Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, and Jacksonport Fire Departments. Assistance was also provided by the Door County Sheriff’s Office and Door County EMS.

Upon arrival, fire crews quickly identified fire extension within the wall cavities and initiated aggressive interior operations. Firefighters opened walls using chainsaws and extinguished the rapidly spreading fire utilizing approximately 50 gallons of water and foam solution.

The gas technician was evaluated on scene by paramedics and released.

The incident remains under investigation; however, preliminary findings indicate the fire was accidental in nature and occurred during the appliance startup process.

The Sister Bay & Liberty Grove Fire Department would like to thank all assisting agencies for their coordinated response and professionalism during the incident.

Honoring the fallen by not letting the remembrance of their sacrifice fade.

Today, as we do every Memorial Day, we hung our large flag from our Tower Ladder at the entrance to Little Sister Cemetery. It’s our privilege to be invited to do this each year.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brush Fire Contained on Hill Road in Sister Bay, Door County

Sister Bay, Wisconsin — At approximately 12:56 p.m., emergency crews responded to a reported brush fire on Hill Road in Sister Bay. The fire ultimately burned an estimated 15 acres.

Departments from across Door County and surrounding areas were dispatched through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), bringing significant personnel and resources to assist in containing the fast-moving fire.

The fire was determined to have originated from a permitted controlled burn that spread beyond its intended area. The homeowner was on scene at the time of the incident and promptly reported the fire.

Fire crews faced challenges due to the fire encroaching on areas of small pine trees and dense juniper bushes, which created access difficulties and contributed to flare-ups during suppression efforts.

Assistance was also provided by local construction companies ‘Hockers’ and ‘JF Construction’ whose personnel utilized a front-end loader and bulldozer to help contain and control the fire, their assistance was greatly appreciated.

Fire crews worked diligently to bring the incident under control by approximately 2:00 p.m. Overhaul operations continued to ensure all hotspots were fully extinguished and to prevent any extension beyond the fire area.

All units completed operations and cleared the scene by 4:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

February 9, 2026

At approximately 12:58 a.m. on February 9, 2026, the Sister Bay & Liberty Grove Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 10685 County Road ZZ in the Town of Liberty Grove.

Initial reports indicated a workshop that was fully involved in fire, with flames spreading to surrounding trees. Upon arrival, first-in units confirmed that a 20-foot by 50-foot, single-story private workshop was fully involved, with no walls or roof structure remaining. Fire suppression efforts were further complicated by large stacks of cordwood located around the exterior of the building, which had also ignited.

Firefighters deployed an aerial fire apparatus to gain rapid control of the fire, which was brought under control within approximately 15 minutes. Crews then completed a thorough overhaul operation using handlines to ensure all remaining hot spots were extinguished. All units were back in service by 4:30 a.m.

The Sister Bay & Liberty Grove Fire Department was assisted by neighboring agencies through the MABAS system, including the Ephraim, Baileys Harbor, Gibraltar, Egg Harbor, and Jacksonport Fire Departments. Additional support was provided by Door County Emergency Medical Services and the Door County Sheriff’s Department.

Due to the extensive damage sustained by the structure, the cause of the fire could not be determined.

While no injuries were reported, the Sister Bay & Liberty Grove Fire Department recognizes the significant loss of property involved in this incident. We extend our sincere sympathy to the property owner. Losses like this are never easy, and our thoughts are with those affected as they begin the process of recovery. The department remains grateful for the cooperation of our partner agencies and the continued support of the community we are proud to serve.
