U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Neal Stratman of Sioux Falls, served as a full-time administrative non-commissioned officer and instructor with the South Dakota Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 196th Regiment (Regional Training Institute), and retired with over 26 years of outstanding service with the South Dakota Army National Guard.
During Stratman’s retirement ceremony, held on July 17 in Sioux Falls, Lt. Col. Yost, commander of the 2nd Battalion, presents Stratman with the United States Flag, the Army Retired Soldier for Life lapel button, and expressed appreciation for his dedicated and honorable service to our country. He also received a coin of appreciation to honor his 26 years of dedicated and outstanding service from Governor Kristi Noem. Stratman received multiple gifts from members of the RTI including a model replica of an M270A1 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) made of mahogany with personalized engravings, a personalized shadow box, a commemorative flag, as well as other items as an appreciation for Stratman’s service, loyalty and dedication to the South Dakota Army National Guard.
Stratman enlisted in the military on May 26, 1993, completed Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training, and assigned as a Light Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic. He attended 13B Field Artillery Cannon Crewmember course and served three years on a Howitzer crew before the unit reorganized into 13M Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). Stratman was selected for the Army Active Duty Guard and Reserve program in May 1999 where he worked full-time for the South Dakota Army National Guard. He served several years with both B Battery, 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery in Salem and B Battery, 2nd Battalion, 147th Field Artillery in Aberdeen, before transferring to the Regional Training Institute in Sioux Falls. He was mobilized in February 2003 to Fort Sill, OK, deployed in 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as a second deployment to Kuwait in 2009.
