Weather radar picks up more than just rainfall!

When large flocks of birds leave their overnight roost at an area lake or wetland, they depart in all directions simultaneously. As our radar beams sample these non-weather objects, the expanding flock creates a distinct "roost ring" on our radar displays.

Watch for these features early in the morning as we continue moving deeper into Fall.

A conditional risk for strong to severe storms will be possible late this evening into the overnight for northeast Nebraska and portions of northwest Iowa. Risk area is mainly along and south of HWY 20 with chances increasing toward the I-80 corridor. Hail up to the size of a half dollar, wind gusts of 60 mph, and heavy rainfall are possible. Isolated pockets of 1”+ of additional accumulations are possible. Though the risk is low, a tornado cannot be ruled out. Storms clear east of the region by sunrise. Since the risk for storms is overnight, be sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings that will wake you up!

Chances for strong to severe storms will be present late this evening into the early overnight. Storms most likely to form along and south of Highway 20 after 9 pm, with the highest risk near the I-80 corridor. Should storms develop they bring a risk of large hail to the size of a half dollar, 60 mph wind gusts, and heavy rainfall. With stronger storms, additional accumulation of 1”+ may be possible. The WPC Day 1 Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) of Excessive Rainfall is in good shape.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue to move northeast through the day on Monday. This activity may become more widely scattered by mid-day.

There will be a narrow window in time late this afternoon where enough clearing could take place for the development of scattered severe storms. The greatest risks will be focused along Highway 20 from Sioux City to Storm Lake. Any thunderstorm development will quickly move southeast by late evening.

Showers and storms return to the area late tonight through Monday. A few storms could be strong to severe.

Widespread rainfall amounts between 0.25" to 0.50" is expected, with locally higher amounts up to and exceeding an inch possible.

Another round of potentially strong to severe storms is possible Monday afternoon and evening, mainly across northwest Iowa.

This potential remains uncertain, so continue to check the forecast for the most up to date information.
