Over 7 million acres have burned this year across more than 49,000 fires, 68% above the ten-year average. Oregon alone has lost 2.3 million acres and broken its own record.

So what effect does federal land policy have? According to the Congressional Budget Office, a wildfire on federal land runs about five times the size of one on nonfederal land right next to it. They experience the same weather, same lightning, but see five times the fire size.

Federal timber harvests have fallen nearly 80% since 1987, from 11 billion board feet a year to under 3 billion. Meanwhile, the Roadless Rule has kept 59 million acres, close to a third of the National Forest System, off limits to fire management for 25 years.

Time to get in the arena, patriots! 🇺🇸

The best defense is a good offense.

Strong public engagement. Good people being supported and encouraged to run for office. Research. Constructive public discourse. Showing up at meetings. Calling legislators. Writing letters. Talking to your neighbors. Supporting organizations and candidates doing good work.

And maybe most importantly—know what you’re FOR, not just what you’re against.

Free people. Free markets. Limited government. Individual responsibility. Strong communities. Opportunity.

Politics belongs to the people who show up.

You don’t have to run for office. You don’t have to be an expert. You don’t even have to agree with everyone on your side.

But you do have to engage.

Get informed. Get involved. Encourage good people. Speak up. Build something better.

Get in the arena. 🇺🇸

So happy to see this. Individualized education is the future.

I was in Florida last week for meetings on education innovation with leaders and lawmakers from across the country. And almost every time I said I was from South Dakota, I heard some version of:

“Oh! So you know Onward Learning and Mary Jo Fairhead?”

One person actually introduced me as “someone who knows Mary Jo.” 😂

Think about that.

A microschool in Martin, South Dakota, built to serve kids from all walks of life—but especially kids on the reservation who desperately need an individualized path—is now one of the most talked-about microschools in the country.

And it was built with private dollars. It is changing kids’ lives in a very visible way.

Meanwhile, South Dakota remains one of the few conservative states that does not allow education dollars to follow the child.

I understand the budget argument. We run a lean state.

But the math is there. There is a path.

And public education is already at a pivot point. Low birth rates, changing enrollment and South Dakota’s rapidly growing homeschool population mean the system is going to change with or without school choice.

So the question isn’t whether change is coming.

The question is whether we spend another generation propping up the legacy system—or get serious about giving South Dakota kids the best education in the country.

Education choice doesn’t have to hurt public schools. Competition, innovation and giving families more options can make all education better.

And increasingly, this isn’t just an education issue.

It’s an economic development issue.

I was talking with business leaders at a conference recently. They asked where I was from. When I said South Dakota, their response stopped me:

“We won’t build in states without school choice. We can’t get families to move there. Fix it, then call us.”

That should get our attention.

And this isn’t theoretical. Eli Lilly recently chose Alabama for a more than $6 BILLION pharmaceutical manufacturing investment after considering hundreds of sites. At an Alabama business conference, a Lilly executive specifically pointed to Alabama’s workforce development and “educational pipeline” as part of what the company loved about the state. Education policy is economic policy. Companies don’t just have to move capital—they have to attract people and their families.

Being a great state with no income tax isn’t enough anymore. States are competing for families, workers, businesses—and talent.

Education is becoming part of the economic infrastructure.

More to come on all of this. But I’m particularly grateful to have a governor willing to start asking the bigger question:

What would it take to make South Dakota #1 in the country for education—for every kid?

Because that should be the goal.

Affordability: we’re on it (iykyk, right South Dakotans?😉). But we really are on the case. For us, the best solutions come from people, not politicians. Which is why we’ve spent the summer talking to real people about the issue. We collect the stories and take them to DC. We listen to the issues & come up with solutions based on real life, not DC politics.

After knocking on doors in six states in July and having 42,844 conversations, this isn't a poll. It's actual people on actual porches.

Of everyone who named a specific issue, 56.2% said the economy and inflation. Stack immigration, energy, health care, government accountability, crime, education, and national security together and they still don't add up to what people said about the cost of living on its own.

One of them was Michael, a voter in Manchester put it this way: "I don't care what they call it on the news. My cart cost forty dollars more than it did last year, and nobody in Washington has explained why."
